About Nancy M. Ryan, M.S., R.D., C.D.E., C.D.-N.

Nancy M. Ryan is a medical nutrition therapist and certified diabetes educator who has been in private practice since 1983.

She completed her Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, in Food and Nutrition at the University of Connecticut followed by a Dietetic Internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She returned to the University of Connecticut and obtained a Master of Science degree in Nutritional Science.

Prior to starting her private practice, Ms. Ryan held positions as research dietitian at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Clinical Research Center and chief clinical dietitian at Norwalk Hospital.

As part of her private practice, Ms. Ryan has provided nutrition consultation as the Director of the Nutrition Center at the American Fitness Institute: AMFIT in Greenwich; the certified diabetes educator and medical nutrition therapist for endocrinology practices in Greenwich and Bridgeport, and as a nutrition consultant for the Greenwich Department of Health, the Institute of Professional Practice, Inc., Woodbridge, the Connecticut Heart Center, Stamford, and the Darien Convalescent Center. Ms. Ryan has had the privilege of providing the nutrition component of the highly successful Smokefree Program for Women that was spearheaded by RYASAP, the Fairfield Department of Health and the Stratford Department of Health in 1995. She received the RYASAP "Above & Beyond" Award, 2000 in recognition of her work in the Smokefree Program. She has also worked with a number of local Health Departments in Connecticut designing and teaching programs on diabetes self-management, reducing dietary fat intake and risk reduction for colorectal cancer.

As a member of the Connecticut Dietetic Association, Mrs. Ryan chaired the Nutrition Services Payment System Task Force (1984-1986) and participated in the Marketing Task Force and Awards Committee, and was President-elect (1986-1987) and President (1987-1988). She was on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association Southwestern Fairfield County Branch, 1988-1990 and was a member of the Nutrition Committee of the Greenwich Health Association. She was a member of the Healthy Living 2000 Task Force in Greenwich, chairing the Nutrition and Exercise Subcommittee of the Task Force.

She is a member of The American Dietetic Association and professional practice groups of the ADA including Diabetes Care and Education, and Sports and Cardiovascular Nutrition. She is certified as a Diabetes Educator by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators and is a State of Connecticut Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist.
