About Sam Maywood, M.D.

A Southern California resident since 1987, Dr. Sam Maywood was recognized as a leader in the study of anesthetics and the field of pain management. He was hand chosen as one of twenty physicians in the United States to begin performing the Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET) procedure, a cutting edge alternative to fusion surgery.

Dr. Maywood also held positions as Senior Instructor at Stanford University Medical School teaching the technique to other physicians. Additionally he was a nationally-known instructor for techniques for implantation of spinal cord stimulators and narcotic pumps.

Dr. Maywood earned his medical doctorate from the UCC School of Medicine, and he completed his internship and residency at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles. He was certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Prior to his term at COAST Surgery Center, Dr. Maywood served as the Director of Pain Management for the Continental Rehabilitation Hospital and two other prominent centers in San Diego. Dr. Maywood was a member of the International Spinal Injection Society, California Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Association, International Neuromodulation Society, Pain Net Society and American Society for Pain Management.

Dr. Maywood also volunteered his time at the COAD Society for Surgical Care of Underprivileged Youth with Facial Deformities.

Dr. Maywood is survived by his wife, Dawn and their three children.
