About Praveen V. Mummaneni, MD

Dr. Praveen Mummaneni is the Joan O'Reilly Endowed Professor in Spine Surgery, Director of the Cervical Spine Program, Director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Program, Director of the Minimally Invasive and Complex Spine Fellowship Program, Co-Director of the UCSF Spine Center, and Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Mummaneni is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He specializes in complex cervical spine surgery for C1-C2 pathologies and instability, cervicothoracic kyphosis, cervical myelopathy and in minimally invasive spine surgery for degenerative spondylolisthesis, stenosis, adult spinal kyphosis and scoliosis, spinal tumors, and spinal trauma.

Dr. Mummaneni has been selected as one of the Best Doctors in America every year from 2005-2016. Furthermore, the San Francisco Chronicle named him a San Francisco Super Doctor, and Marin Magazine and Caslte Connolly have cited him as a Top Doctor.

Dr. Mummaneni received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He completed his general surgical internship at the University of California at Irvine. Dr. Mummaneni completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of California at San Francisco. During his residency, he spent one year as a visiting scholar in biomechanics at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley. Following his residency, Dr. Mummaneni completed fellowship training in Complex Spine Surgery at Emory University. During his spine fellowship, Dr. Mummaneni received advanced subspecialty training in Adult Spinal Deformity surgery at Northwestern University and with the Indiana Spine Group.

He is an active member of many prestigous spine associations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of Spine and Peripheral Nerves, and Scoliosis Research Society. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques and Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.
