Maintaining Your Back for Your Lifetime
After the orthopaedic team has guided you through surgery, it is up to you to maintain a healthy back. The following suggestions may help alleviate and prevent back pain.
Maintain a Healthy
Lifestyle
A healthy lifestyle reduces stress and tension that
can lead to back pain or disability. Control your
weight, eat well-balanced meals, get enough calcium
and do not smoke.
Exercise Regularly
In addition to specific low back strengthening exercises,
try to add overall conditioning activities. We recommend
walking, swimming or biking to maintain a healthy
back.
Practice Good Body
Mechanics
Using good posture and body mechanics protects your
back when you are sitting, standing and lifting.
Schedule Periodic
Office Visits
Patients who undergo lumbar spine fusion surgery should
see their surgeon periodically after surgery. This
varies depending on the individual. This follow-up
helps diagnose any potential complications that may
arise and allows us to monitor the progress of all
lumbar fusion patients.
