Grape Seed Extract

Herbal Supplements

The Basics
Grape seed extract is an herbal preparation made from grapes. This extract contains oligomeric proanthocyandin (OPC), an important antioxidant.

Although relatively new, OPCs reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and protect the body physically (environmental chemicals) and mentally. Researchers suggest OPC may benefit cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration from diabetes, and cancer (anti-tumor). It has been taken to treat varicose veins, premenstrual syndrome, dental plaque, and lymphedema (an accumulation of lymph fluid in soft tissue).

Sources
Grape seed extract is available in the following forms: fluid extracts, tablets, and capsules. Purchase standardized products (containing 95% OPC).

Guidelines and Cautions
Although grape seed extract is considered safe, always follow package directions.

If lymphedema, macular degeneration, diabetes, or other serious disease is present, only take grape seed under the direction of a medical professional.

As with any vitamin, herb, or supplement, always consult a medical professional prior to incorporating these substances into your diet.

Many patients report feeling improvement in their general well being taking dietary supplements. The Editorial Board of SpineUniverse.com, however, cannot endorse such products since most lack peer reviewed scientific validation of their claims. In most cases an appropriate diet and a "multiple vitamin" will provide the necessary dietary supplements for most individuals. Prior to taking additional dietary supplements it is recommended that patients consult with their personal physician to discuss their specific supplement requirements.
