Goldenseal

Herbal Supplements

The Basics
Goldenseal, a small plant, contains essential oils, iron, manganese, potassium, and vitamins A, C, B-complex, and E. It also contains berberine, a compound with antibacterial (antibiotic) properties.

As an antibiotic, Goldenseal cleanses the body, counters infection, and strengthens the immune system. More specifically, it helps to relieve cold/flu symptoms (sore throat, earaches), reduce blood pressure and blood sugar (hyperglycemia), improve digestion (stomachache, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, hemorrhoids), and has been used to treat disorders affecting the bladder, prostate, and vagina.

Sources
Goldenseal is available in the following forms: tablets, encapsulated root powder, tinctures, and extracts. Purchase standardized products.

Guidelines and Cautions
Always follow package directions.

Pregnant women should not take goldenseal.

If glaucoma, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease is present, only use goldenseal under the direction of a medical professional.

As with any vitamin, herb, or supplement, always consult a medical professional prior to incorporating these substances into your diet.

Many patients report feeling improvement in their general well being taking dietary supplements. The Editorial Board of SpineUniverse.com, however, cannot endorse such products since most lack peer reviewed scientific validation of their claims. In most cases an appropriate diet and a "multiple vitamin" will provide the necessary dietary supplements for most individuals. Prior to taking additional dietary supplements it is recommended that patients consult with their personal physician to discuss their specific supplement requirements.
