About Our Practice
Dr. Prévost integrates the best of Eastern and Western healing traditions and modalities for the optimal health and vitality of her patients. Using a more holistic paradigm to patient management, she treats the person, not just the disease.
She specializes in Acupuncture Orthopedics, which is a subspecialty of Acupuncture. It has a higher degree of clinical skills and education as it relates to neuro-musculoskeletal disorders. Acupuncture Orthopedics integrates the ancient wisdom and practices of Traditional Oriental Medicine with the diagnostic and treatment modalities of modern Western conventional medicine.
The ultimate goal is for the patient to have the best possible outcome, in the shortest possible time, and at the least possible expense. This may require a collaboration, through referral or consultation, with other disciplines such as Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Physicial Medicine and Rehabilitation, Oncology, Diagnostic Radiology, and Pain Psychology.
When assessing and treating a neuro-musculoskeletal disorder, a detailed physical and neurologic evaluation is performed. Special tests are ordered, when indicated, to either confirm or rule out a diagnosis. These special tests include structural tests (i.e. x-rays, CT, MRI, Bone Scan, Myelogram, Discogram, and/or Radiodensitometry) and functional tests (Nerve Conduction Velocity, Needle Electromyography, Doppler Ultrasound, and/or laboratory Tests).
Throughout the patient's course of treatment, the patient's progress is documented with the use of subjective outcome measurements such as nationally recognized questionnaires that the patient completes which rate the amount of disability their pain is causing, as well as objective functional tests which measures the patient's range of motion and muscle strength. Additional special tests are ordered when indicated, and referrals to other practitioners are made when warranted.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that acupuncture proven through controlled trials to be an effective for the treatment of low back pain, neck pain, postoperative pain, Rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, sprain, osteoarthritis, radicular and pseudoradicular pain, spine pain, and acute stiff neck. The National Institute of Health (NIH) concluded that sufficient scientific evidence exists to support the use of acupuncture for the treatement of low back pain, osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain.
