Welcome to our practice!

Back and neck pain can have many, many causes. We offer not one but spectrum of sophisticated methodologies selected for the particular problem causing back or neck pain. We constantly monitor the technology and also participate in research. Whenever a treatment becomes approved and shows to be safe and better than a placebo ("sugar pill"), it becomes part of our program. Please visit our website www.smpsclinic.com) and research our therapeutic modalities aimed at promptly reducing pain, often without surgery, and giving you back your life!

In addition to back and neck pain, we specialize in many painful disorders including sciatica, chronic migraines, arm and leg pain, neuropathy, phantom limb syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, facial pain, radiculopathy, failed back syndrome, cancer pain and many other forms of chronic pain. We work closely with many other specialists including neurologists, psychologists, orthopedic and spine surgeons, physiatrists, oncologists, and psychiatrists to optimally coordinate the care of our patients.

Qualifications of the pain physician specialist at St Michael's Clinics:

Few things are more important to you, the patient, than the qualifications and skills of your treating physician. Dr. Pappolla, the pain specialist, completed medical residencies and fellowship training in Neurology and Pain Medicine (anesthesia based) and also in Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, and Neuropathology. This required 10 additional years of formal training (following graduation from medical school) all pursued in programs accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties, considered the "gold-standard" in physician education in the United States. Dr. Pappolla is among a distinguished group of physicians holding active board-certifications in 5 disciplines of medicine (pain management, neurology, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and neuropathology); all mentioned specialty boards are recognized members of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Pappolla has also been serving for over 10 years as an expert consultant for the NIH (National Institutes of Health) and a professor of neurology or faculty at several of the most prestigious medical schools in the USA including the Medical University of South Carolina, Mount Sinai Medical School in New York, New York Medical College and Texas Medical Center at Houston. He has taught neurosciences to medical students and medical residents for over twenty years and authored more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters in Neuroscience. His research is world acclaimed as evidenced in more than 500 textbooks where it is cited (please view some of his research here:http://books.google.com/books?q=pappolla). Dr Pappolla has returned to Houston after hurricane Katrina and his goal is to place all his experience and knowledge at the service of our communities in Texas.
