About Our Practice
Our goal here at North American Laserscopic Spine Institute is to inform the world of a revolutionary technique in pain management called the AccuraScope™ Procedure that is changing the way patients, physicians and other medical professionals address back pain. Dr. Lawrence Rothstein, M.D., pioneer of the AccuraScope Procedure™, currently operates out of Riverview Health Institute in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Rothstein is a board-certified pain management anesthesiologist who has performed just over 3,000 of these procedures in a period of 8 years.
The procedure: the state of the art solution to back pain
Dr. Rothstein's revolutionary AccuraScope™ Procedure diagnoses and treats disc problems directly in the spinal canal where the problems occur. As a diagnostic tool, the MRI is useful, but provides incomplete and often incorrect data. MRIs cannot show inflammation.
Open spine surgery often fails, and may even create further problems. Other procedures often create scar tissue and damage healthy tissue.
Other so-called "minimally invasive" techniques are indirect, single-level and are not diagnostic.
Dr. Rothstein discovered the solution: The AccuraScope™ Procedure (Discectomy and Neural Decompression).
Using state-of-the-art technology and the procedure he pioneered, Dr. Rothstein finds and treats problems that MRIs cannot detect. During the interactive surgery, the patient is under "twilight" sedation and able to communicate with the doctor. The doctor inserts a thin tube with a camera and instruments into the spinal canal through a natural opening at the base of the spine. The camera provides direct view of the problem(s) and the attached laser will shrink herniated discs, seal annular tears, remove inflammation, eliminate pain nerves and more.
The Procedure is the world’s most advanced minimally-invasive endoscopic solution to back pain. Using fluoroscope guidance, Dr. Rothstein enters a natural opening in the sacral hiatus armed with an endoscopic fiberoptic scope and a laser to diagnose and repair ailments on both sides of the spinal canal such as tears, ruptures, herniations, bulges, or other abnormalities.
The facility: Riverview Health Institute
Most of our procedures are performed at the Riverview Health Institute in Dayton, OH. It has decor much like a five-star hotel, tastefully decorated, without the clinical atmosphere you have come to associate with hospitals. Accommodations are available for friends and family of those few patients who stay overnight. The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes, and patients are usually discharged in about an hour. Many patients can return to work and resume normal activities the following day.
