About Our Practice
Ronald Kanner, MD joined the North Shore-LIJ Health System in 1990 and in 2005 was appointed Chairman of Neurology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center.
Dr. Kanner was born in Brooklyn, New York and received his education at Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn College and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Madrid, Spain. Following his internship at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia General Hospital) in 1975, Dr. Kanner completed his residency and chief residency in neurology at the Affiliated Hospitals of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Kanner then went on to complete two years of fellowship training in neuro-oncology and pain management at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1981 to pursue his interest pain management and neurological education.
In 1981 Dr. Kanner established the first Pain Service at the Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and, in 1985, he and Dr. Russell Portenoy expanded the service to include Montefiore Medical Center. Presently, Dr. Kanner is Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and serves as Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Neurology. Dr. Kanner’s numerous publications have centered around pain management, both in cancer and non-cancer patients.
