About Our Practice
Practice Description: Non-operative spine and musculoskeletal care that draws on the best of Traditional Western Medicine and rehabilitation principles, with thoughtful incorporation of complementary therapies and mind-body medicine. My practice is set at an outpatient clinic and rehabilitation facility affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The institution is famous for excellence in Senior Care (geriatrics) but I care for adult patients of all ages. Appropriate diagnoses include chronic pain, diseases of the spine, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain.
I earned my MD at Duke University, and trained in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) and Internal Medicine at Harvard Medical School. I also completed a clinical fellowship in Integrative Medicine at University of Maryland.
I have had a longstanding interest in enhancing the body's natural healing intelligence. This has led to training in a variety of approaches to healing, including osteopathic manual medicine, zero balancing, cranio-sacral, visual imagery, meditation, mindfulness-based stress-reduction, energy medicine, other forms of mind-body medicine, as well as tai chi (taiji), Chi Kung (qigong) and yoga. I have some knowledge about, but do not formally practice traditional chinese medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and naturopathic medicine. With a foundation in traditional Western Allopathic medicine, and knowledge and skills in complementary medicine, I practice Integrative Pain Management.
I listen carefully to my patients, and thoroughly review the history to understand how physical, mental, emotional, chemical, and spiritual factors contribute to their difficulties. I base my approach on the clinical situation and the patient's preference. When appropriate, I diagnose and treat pain problems like most doctors do (with lab tests, xrays, MRIs, medications, injections, rehabilitation therapy, referal to surgery and so on). If the patient is interested, I go beyond that to address the interface of body, mind, and spirit, and incorporate less-invasive approaches in order to facilitate healing. I work closely with physical and occupational therapy, mind-body specialists, behavioral medicine, and practitioners of complementary medicine.
