Alan E. Heilman, M.D. is noted for his work in reconstructive spinal surgery: a subspecialty of orthopedic surgery. He has practiced orthopedic spinal surgery for the last 20 years and has expertise in several areas of the spine including the cervical and lumbar spine. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal pain diagnosis, lumbar and cervical spondylolisthesis correction and reduction, and outpatient lumbar hemi-laminectomies.
A native of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Heilman received his Bachelor's degree in biochemistry and pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin. He practiced pharmacy for two years before entering medical school where he received his medical doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine. Dr Heilman has the benefit of having trained in two complementary fellowships in spine care: neurosurgery and orthopedic spinal reconstruction. He was awarded a fellowship in spinal surgery under the direction of Mr. John P. O'Brien at the London Clinic in England. He also worked in a collinear fellowship in spinal neurosurgery with Mr. Alan Crockard at the Hospitals for Neurology and Nervous Disorders in London.
Dr. Heilman and his colleagues in the Fondren Orthopedic Group are recognized nationally for breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders. Their advances in this area include: a better understanding of spinal pain and where it originates, better management of lumbar spondylolisthesis, accelerated recovery including outpatient surgery as well as, minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Heilman's comprehensive approach looks at the whole patient. The appropriate diagnosis is paramount to the correct treatment of the patient. Dr. Heilman is able to identify closely with his patients since he has had a fusion of his lumbar spine and clearly knows the challenges and benefits.
He has won several awards including Top Doc Awards for the city of Houston, as well as nationally.
