Dr. Obedian is a national speaker on a variety of orthopaedic problems including back pain, kyphoplasty and osteoarthritis. He is an instructor for Kyphon and sits on their advisory board. He is also a published author in national medical journals.
Some surgical procedures include:
The Kyphoplasty is a new technique for repairing osteoporotic spinal compression fractures in patients with intractable pain. A special needle is inserted into the fractured vertebral body under fluoroscopy, a balloon is inflated, which restores vertebral body height, and cement is injected into the space left by the balloon. Patients go home the same day, and pain relief usually occurs within 48 hours
The PLIF (Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion): This procedure creates a fusion between two or three lumbar spine segments using spinal instrumentation and bone grafts. It is the new procedure of choice for patients with intractable back pain who require surgery.
Richard Obedian, M.D. has one of the largest experiences with PLIF on Long Island. He is one of the few orthopaedic suregeons on Long Island with special fellowship training in complex spinal instrumentation.
