The Charlotte Spine Center opened in 1991 as the first freestanding facility in the region fully dedicated to the care and treatment of problems originating in the spine. The physician staff, consisting of 5 dedicated spine surgeons, 2 physiatrists, and 1 neurologist, is committed to providing the highest level of care to patients suffering from pain, numbness, or weakness originating anywhere from the neck to the lower back. Our physicians are committed to continually providing the most up-to-date techniques available for the surgical and non-surgical treatment of pinched nerves, fractures, tumors, deformities and infections of the spine. Many of the procedures performed are outpatient procedures, or allow the patient to go home the following morning. These procedures range from minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of pinched nerves to the newly introduced kyphoplasty for the treatment of painful spinal compression fractures. The physicians at the Spine Center are actively involved in research, including the development of spine implants, cervical disc replacements, and bone substitutes. They are also involved in teaching these latest techniques to other physicians. The two physiatrists, who specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, are experts in occupational medicine, minimally invasive spinal care, sports medicine, and orthopedic pain management. Both are fellowship-trained in diagnostic therapeutic spine injections and electrodiagnostic medicine. The Spine Center facility also houses a Physical Therapy Center, fully equipped with exercise room and swimming pool, and staffed by a team of licensed therapists specializing in the care of spine disorders. Physicians and therapists meet weekly to discuss complex cases, and to make treatment recommendations as a team. This allows patients to benefit from the many areas of expertise available at our facility.
