About Our Practice
Dr. Meic H. Schmidt has particular interest and expertise in the treatment of metastatic spine tumors, spinal cord tumors and traumatic spine injuries. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Schmidt is one of the few Neurosurgeons in the United States that have fellowship training in both Neuro-oncology and Complex Spinal Surgery. He serves as the Director of the Spinal Oncology Service at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. Dr. Schmidt's practice emphasizes patient education about their disease process so they can actively participate in selecting the best treatment options.
Specialized surgical procedures include microsurgery, spinal endoscopy including thoracoscopy and minimally invasive spinal surgery as well as complex spinal reconstruction that requires spinal instrumentation, decompression and fusion. Dr. Schmidt also performs Radiosurgery for spine and spinal cord tumor in collaboration with Radiation Oncologists.
Dr. Schmidt has authored many chapters and scientific articles on a variety of topics including neuro-oncology, photodynamic therapy, spinal tumors and spinal surgery techniques. His areas of research have included tumor biology, clinical trials outcome, chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. He is the one of the Prinicipal investigators for the kyphoplasty cliniclal trial. Dr. Schmidt was inducted into the NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame in 2000 for his contribution of the application of LED technology for photodynamic therapy of cancer.
