About Our Practice
Dr. Neal Naff is a native of southwest Virginia. He completed his undergraduate education at the Virginia Military Institute where he was a distinguished military graduate, class president, and valedictorian. He completed his medical school training and neurosurgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. As a resident he was recognized by the National Stroke Association with an award as a national research fellow for his work on brain hemorrhages.
After completing his residency in 1998 he became a staff neurosurgeon at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he was Director of Peripheral Nerve Surgery and Co-Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery. He returned to practice neurosurgery in Baltimore in 2000.
He was appointed Chief of Neurosurgery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in January 2003. He became surgical director of the Cyberknife Radiosurgery Center at Sinai Hospital later that year. He was appointed Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Joseph Medical Center in 2006. He is fellowship trained in endovascular neurosurgery and board certified in neurological surgery. He was the first surgeon in Maryland to perform robotic guided radiosurgery to the brain and spine. Dr. Naff has faculty appointments at both Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University School of Health Services. In 2001 he was awarded the faculty teaching award by the resident neurosurgeons at Johns Hopkins Hospital "In Recognition of Excellence in Teaching and Commitment to Resident Education" and in 2011 was awarded the Neurosurgery Chairman’s “Award of Excellence in Teaching”. Based on surveys of Baltimore area physicians, Dr. Naff was named "Top Doctor" by Baltimore Magazine for the field of neurosurgery in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. He was recognized as a Maryland/DC/Virginia "Super Doc" in the Washington Post in 2011 based on a survey of doctors in the mid-Atlantic region. In 2011, Dr. Naff was listed in U.S. News inaugural listing of Tops Doctors in America and was designated as “among the top 1% in the nation in his or her specialty”.
He has authored over 50 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He has active research interests in stroke, brain hemorrhages, cerebral aneurysms, brain tumors, chronic pain syndromes, neck and back problems, and peripheral nerve disorders. He and his research colleagues have been awarded nine federally funded and peer reviewed research grants for their work on new treatments for patients with brain hemorrhage. He was principal investigator for a federally funded multicenter clinical trial evaluating this new treatment for brain hemorrhage. He was the founding National Director of Performance Improvement for the CyberKnife Radiosurgery Society. He belongs to several national neurosurgical organizations and has served on the executive committee of the Maryland Neurosurgical Society since 2002.
He is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is active in the teaching program for the neurosurgical residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He lectures locally and nationally on brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders.

On July 26, 2011, U.S. News Media Group announced U. S. News Top Doctors, a free searchable directory available atwww.usnews.com/top-doctors that lists nearly 30,000 peer-nominated physicians across the country. According to U.S. News, the Top Doctors was created in collaboration with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publisher of America's Top Doctors and other consumer health guides. It draws from Castle Connolly's database of Top Doctors, all recommended for their clinical skills by other doctors and individually vetted by a physician-led reaserach team. Dr. Naff was not only listed as one of the Top Doctors, he was also singled out as "among the top 1% in the nation in his or her specialty".
