About Our Practice

Initial examination will consist of a neurological and orthopedic examination. The patient will then be assessed for biomechanical dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system, which could include: joint restrictions, soft tissue (muscle/fascia) inflexibility, ligament instability, dysfunctional gait patterns, and de-conditioned (weak) muscles. Inflammation plays a huge role in tissue healing and remodeling. Controlling inflammation and pain is the doctor’s first objective. However, the patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living pain free and joint stabilization thru strength training are the keys to feeling great long term and seeing less of the doctor. It is of the utmost importance to Dr. Burtenshaw that patients are NOT over treated or under treated. Each patient will be treated according to their individual needs, as no two patients are the same. Patients can expect some or all of the following treatment procedures depending on the nature of the injury and the condition of the patient: spinal and extremity manipulation, strength training, stretching, manual and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization techniques, ultrasound, electric stimulation, and hot and cold therapy. Active rehabilitation is used to re-educate the muscles to regain neuromuscular control of the joints, which will ultimately lead to pain free range of motion and prevention of future injury. If a patient doesn't respond to conservative care within a reasonable amount of time, Dr. Burtenshaw will re-evaluate his treatment approach or see that the patient is referred to the appropriate medical physician for further evaluation of their condition. Dr. Burtenshaw is a team player and as such will work together with other health care professionals to ensure that the patient gets the best possible treatment options for their specific condition. Dr. Burtenshaw is proud to be the first Chiropractic Physician employed by one of the valley's largest hospital based rehabilitation centers.
