Ana Lucia Associate Professor of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
Michael G. Vitale MD, MPH is the Chief of the Pediatric Spine and Scoliosis Service and Associate Chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children's Hospital of New York - Presbyterian. He is also the Ana Lucia Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Vitale has a special interest in the treatment of complex spinal deformities in children and has a specific focus in the management of scoliosis in the young child. Dr. Vitale has spearheaded the Center for Early Onset Scoliosis at the Childrens Hospital of New York, which seeks to develop an infrastructure to optimize treatment and improve outcomes for young children with scoliosis treated using a variety of techniques including spinal casting, growth rods, the Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib Device and vertebral stapling. As Director of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Group, Dr. Vitale leads the clinical research team in a large research effort which focuses on the assessment of patient outcomes in children with various orthopedic problems, and ways to optimize the quality of life of these children. Their research is often funded by multi-year grants, and their findings are published in leading medical journals and presented at national and international conferences. Dr. Vitale has authored numerous original manuscripts and textbook chapters on the treatment of scoliosis. As part of the Board of the National Chest Wall and Spine Deformity Study Group, Dr. Vitale participates in multicenter studies aimed at improving care of young people with scoliosis. Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Vitale has served on the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Subgroup. He has been President of the Brooklyn Orthopaedic Society and serves on the editorial boards of leading medical journals. Dr. Vitale has been involved in efforts to advocate for children through the efforts of the Institute of Medicine, as well as through efforts of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. Dr. Vitale travels abroad as part of volunteer efforts to help children with orthopaedic problems, and he enjoys running marathons, mountain biking and downhill skiing.
