Patient Base Outcomes: The SRS Instrument

Information provided by

Exhibit from the SRS 2002 Annual Meeting
PURPOSE: Outcomes research is becoming increasingly important and Orthopaedic Surgeons must become familiar with Patient Based Outcomes to scientifically validate the efficacy and cost effectiveness of orthopaedic treatments. The purpose of this poster is to educate and familiarize readers with information on outcomes research, outcomes measures, the Scoliosis Research Society outcomes instrument, and its application.

METHODS: This is primarily an educational poster that will educate the reader regarding the above.

RESULTS: As a result of reading this poster, the reader will understand that the SRS outcomes instrument was designed as a disease specific questionnaire that utilizes new and previously validated questions divided into seven equally weighted domains which are pain, general self-image, post-operative self-image, general function, overall level of activity, postoperative function and satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS: The SRS patient based outcomes instrument is a simple and practical disease specific questionnaire that provides valid and reliable patient measures in scoliosis patients.
