Axial section through the right sacroiliac
(SI) joint and the lesser pelvis at the level of S3–S4 (note the
vestige of the S3–S4 disc). At this level the internal iliac artery
is approaching the SI joint, overlying the internal iliac vein which
is in immediate contact with the joint. The layers and slightly
different orientation of fibers of the gluteus maximus and medius
muscles can be distinguished. The rectum portion of the colon is
surrounded by lymph nodes (pink) and a rete of small vessels.
