Osteoporosis: Detection and Diagnosis
A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is used to diagnose osteoporosis, detect bone loss in its early stages (osteopenia), determine risk for future fracture, and monitor bone changes associated with treatment.
There are a number of reliable tests for measure mineral density. Your BMD test will be a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) test. It is safe, non-invasive and painless, and is the most reliable diagnostic tool used to check bone density throughout the body. DXA (or DEXA) measures bone density in the hip and lumbar spine; areas susceptible to loss of bone density and fracture.
The test is easy and requires no special preparation patient's part.
