Oral diclofenac sodium with misoprostol is combination product
containing a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and
a cytoprotective (stomach protecting) agent, respectively. It
is used as an alternative to other NSAIDs to reduce inflammation
and pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis,
without causing unwanted side effects, such as stomach irritation
and ulcers.
Diclofenac with misoprostol has anti-inflammatory, fever-reducing,
and pain-relieving properties. Diclofenac works by inhibiting
cyclooxygenase, an enzyme responsible for making prostaglandins
which are mediators of inflammation. Misoprostol, a synthetic
prostaglandin E1 analogue, inhibits gastric acid secretion and
reduces the risk of gastrointestinal irritation and ulcers.
