OxyContin is the brand name for oxycodone. This prescription medication is a narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine. It is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain in select patients. Oxycodone dulls the brain's pain perception center. OxyContin is not for short-term, or 'as needed' use, including the treatment of acute pain. High doses of OxyContin can depress respiration (slow breathing) and affect circulation.
