A Physician’s Guide to Bracing

Practical Uses: Postoperative

The purpose of postoperative bracing is to immobilize the spine during the early stages of fusion and healing. Despite advances in internal fixation, many patients who undergo thoracic / lumbar / sacral instrumentation and fusion procedures require postoperative bracing to restrict micromotion and promote healing. In addition, a postoperative brace protects the spine and may provide pain relief by limiting or restricting flexion, extension, and rotation.

LumboPlus®
This functional orthosis is indicated for postoperative use, as well as for treatment of degenerative disc disease and / or disc herniation, facet syndrome, lumbosacral instability, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and spondylolysis. A grid of conformable metal stays provides proper stabilization and support to limit and control movement of the lower thoracic spine.

LumboPlus is made of an anatomically contoured knit to ensure optimal fit. The bi-elastic knit ensures 360-degrees of compression and provides stabilization while allowing natural spinal muscle movement and activation, limiting muscle atrophy. Its Low Power Tension (LPT) strap system permits the application of considerable force against the body without much effort. Also, the practical front fastener with hand pockets facilitates correct anatomical fit along the muscle line. The abdominal pad provides improved abdominal cavity compression and hydrostatic lift.

LordoLoc®
The LordoLoc back support provides support for the lower back and pelvis area to help relieve pain and help alleviate muscle spasms. The back support has tension straps with Velcro fasteners that target areas where compression is needed. The lightweight, knitted support also has multi–directional support to aid in relieving painful spinal joints. This back support is porous and will conform to the shape of your body while providing the utmost in comfort.

Back Support, LordoLoc, Features:

  • Helps alleviate pain in lower back and pelvic area
  • Tension straps with Velcro fasteners to target areas needing compression
  • Lightweight, knitted support
  • Multi–directional support that helps relieve pain in spinal joints
  • Conforms to body shape

SofTec® Lumbo
The SofTec Lumbo orthosis is multifunctional for stabilization of the lower spine. Indications include after lumbar disc and / or stabilization surgery, degenerative instability, facet syndrome, lower lumbar fracture, lumbar spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, and tumor.

SofTec® Lumbo’s modular construction allows for controlled therapy through individually adaptable three-step therapy. The orthosis can be adjusted directly in the patient’s bed, even if the patient is in a lying position.

Stage 1 (Stabilization phase):
For eective postoperative or initially conservative stabilization of vertebral body segments S1 to L4 (”Short”) or S1 to L3 (“Long”), the orthosis is used together with the shell (diagram 2).
Stage 2 (Mobilization phase):
During the initial stages of mobilization with progressive rehabilitation, the shell is removed and the textile element in the affected lumbosacral area is reinforced with CFR rods.
Stage 3 (Activity phase):
As patients become increasingly active, the CFR rods are replaced by formable metal stays, thereby reducing the external supportive effect.
