Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Software of the Mean Curve of a Scoliotic Spine: Automation of Lenke’s Classification.

· (a Medtronic Sofamor Danek)PURPOSE: There is a great number of classifications of frontal scoliotic shapes, such as the Kings classification. Recently, Lenkes classification appeared by adding a lateral shape parameter. The goal is to use a software allowing us to reconstruct a simplified three-dimensional shape of the set spine pelvis from two obtained X-rays using a specific radiological protocol, and then to give automatically the result of the Lenkes classification.
METHODS: Two long X-rays images (frontal and lateral views of the spine) are taken. The subject stands immobile on a rotating plate, his stability being controlled. Within 10 minutes, from landmarks and tangents, with the software, the three-dimensional real shape of spine is then calculated from both views.
RESULTS: Results show the simplified geometric model of spine in space and the automatic Lenkes classification given by the software.
CONCLUSIONS: The proposed simplified model has been retained for clinical applications because it is easy, fast and reproducible when used by medical doctors.
