Cervical Spine Injuries, Fractures and Whiplash - Ligamentum Flavum Avulsion

Ligamentum Flavum Avulsion from the Lamina C7

Ligamentum flavum avulsion from the lamina of C7
Ligamentum flavum avulsion from the lamina of C7. The interspinous and interlaminar soft tissues are stripped from the upper surface of the spinous process of T1 and its lamina. While we typically found concurrent ruptures of the posterior annulus associated with posterior ligament disruptions, the annulus of the C7–T1 disc is intact in this specimen. Both facet joint capsules were also torn at this level. In addition, both atlanto–axial joints, the cruciate ligament and the tectorial membrane were ruptured and a massive hematomyelia was found anteriorly in the spinal cord between C3 and C6. Note also the cartilage cap covering the C7 spinous process.
