Articular pillar anatomy in a 72–year–old
man who had been operated on by posterior screw–plate fixation using
a small AO/ASIF DC plate and 3.5mm cancellous screws. Before in situ
freezing of the spine and removal of the specimen, the arteries had
been injected with red contrast medium. The implants were extracted
from the specimen and the screw tracts and plate cavities were
filled with a blue casting medium. This screw has violated the
inferior articular process of C5, its tip lies in the upper portion
of the facet joint stopping short of the vertebral artery. Note also
the C5 root sheath and the C6 dorsal root ganglion.
