Scoliosis Question and Answer: Can I Take My Brace Off?
I have been wearing my brace for a year and a half now and I have been very good about remembering to put it on. I forgot it a couple of days because I was in such a hurry and I was going to miss the bus. My scoliosis hasn't gotten worse and I don't want to wear it anymore. I am 13 years old and the doctor tells me my bones are very young. Do you think I can stop wearing it?
Taking your brace off too soon would not be a good idea. How much growth you have left can be estimated by looking at bone growth x-rays along with some of the other things that let your doctor know that you are done growing. By your doctor telling you that your bones are young, he or she is telling you that you have spine growth left. As long as you have spine growth left, there is a risk for increasing your scoliosis.
Talk to your doctor and see if there is an estimated time for how much longer you will need to wear your brace. Remember, that this is an estimate. It is important to wear your brace during growth so keep up the good work and remember that wearing your brace now is helping you keep your spine as straight as it can be and that is great.
