Treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease and Degenerative Spondylolisthesis of the Lumbar Spine - Combinations

Fusion Techniques for Degenerative Spondylolisthesis and Degenerative Disc Disease

SRS CORE CURRICULUM

Combined Anterior lnterbody Fusion and Posterolateral Fusion:

This technique is indicated for discogenic back pain when the posterior lumbar internode fusion is not an option or because of the surgeon's preference 16. Combined anterior/posterior fusion may also be indicated in situations such as pseudoarthrosis or when significant epidural fibrosis is present and internode support is felt to be indicated. In males the risk of impotence continues to be a risk related to this approach.

Figure 4 (A – E) represents radiographs of a patient with discogenic back pain secondary to degenerative disc disease L5–S1 who underwent a combined anterior–posterior fusion L5–S1 with vehicle instrumented and titanium mesh.
