After Spine Surgery: Questions and Answers
If I have surgery and have a metal rod put in my back, will I set off the
airline metal detectors?
You shouldn't, but that is one of the most common questions doctors and nurses
hear! Only about 1% of people will set off the metal detectors - for whatever
reason - but most people don't. If you do set it off, they will probably frisk
you but they sure won't be able to fine the rod in your back!!
Will I be taller after surgery?
Most kids that have surgery for scoliosis or kyphosis will gain a little bit
of height after surgical correction of their curve. The amount depends on how
big the curve was and how much correction and straightening was achieved.
Will I grow any taller if my spine is fused?
You will not grow any taller in the fused areas, however, that growth would
have been crooked growth. The surgery often adds to the patient's over-all height.
Growth will continue normally in the unfused portions of the spine as well as
in the legs, arms, and other parts of the body. If I have surgery on my back
for a herniated disc, will I be able to play sports? Yes, typically kids are
able to resume their normal sports, about three weeks after surgery.
