Neurosurgeons are special doctors who treat disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and spine.

surgeon

Before becoming a neurosurgeon, they go to school for many years. This includes 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, one year as a student surgeon, and 6 to 7 years training in a hospital as a student neurosurgeon. That adds up to 16 years of school!

In medical school they learn about many things such as the body, disease, laboratory tests, medication, surgery, and how to keep people healthy. Student doctors learn how to take care of real patients under the guidance of older doctors.

In addition, neurosurgeons, like all other doctors, must pass tests before they can be licensed. To keep up to date with medical advances, neurosurgeons continue to learn through special educational courses.
