C1-C2 Transarticular Screw Fixation
Since the introduction of C1-C2 transarticular screw fixation in 1979, the technique has been effectively used for various
C1-C2 disorders.
However, despite favorable reports of fusion rates approaching 100%, many surgeons remain hesitant to employ the technique. Broad acceptance of the technique has been hindered by concerns regarding vertebral artery injury, incorrect screw placement, and so forth. The Clinical Department of Neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine, has extensive experience with this technique, having treated 73 patients for atlanto-axial instability between 1992 and 1998. The following video presents the surgical technique and reviews the outcomes of the 73 cases.
