Biaxin: Warnings

Clarithromycin  [Oral]

Biaxin

Warning: Diarrhea caused by pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibiotics, antibacterials, as well as quinolones. Consider this as a possibility if severe diarrhea occurs after therapy with an antibiotic, an antibacterial, or a quinolone.
Clarithromycin should not be used in pregnant women unless alternative therapy is not appropriate. If pregnancy occurs during therapy, consider the risks versus the benefits, as well as the possibility of discontinuing.
Never take clarithromycin at the same time as astemizole, cisapride, pimozide or terfenadine. These combinations may cause severe cardiovascular events including death.

Infants and Children
Dosages must be administered under the supervision of a physician experienced in the pediatric use of clarithromycin.

Adults Over 60
Although a dosage adjustment may not be needed, caution should nevertheless be exercised together with careful monitoring, as patients in this age group tend to exhibit reduced renal and hepatic functions.

Drug Dependency
This drug is not expected to cause physical or psychological dependence.

Pregnancy Risk Category: C

Pregnancy Warnings
This drug should be used only if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus, AND there are no alternative therapy suitable.

Prolonged Use
This is usually effective in 7 to 14 days of therapy. Prolonged use can cause superinfections of non-susceptible organisms. Consult your physician about regular examinations including liver and kidney function tests.
