Fusion of C4 & C3 in a 13 year old

Started by Parent on 09/15/2010 12:43pm

My son (13 years old) tore the ligament between C4 & C3. The ligament is not healing and the gap between C4 & C3 is growing. He has been in a neck brace for 4 weeks. Our doctor wants to put a wire between C4 & C3 and fuse the bones. My big question is dealing with growth issues. He still has years to grow. What will happen to his neck when the rest of his body is growing?

Thanks

Very sorry to hear about your son. I certainly don't have any medical answers for you. but he seems so young to have fusion. Ask this question of your surgeon. you must get 2nd and 3rd opinions, and make sure you speak to with a neurosurgeon.

You have a terrible/big decision to make for your child. I have been through fusion for lumber back. I have a 14-year-old son also. I would never want to go through this surgery .I know cervical isn't quite as bad but still massively painful. Like bicycle said get lots of opinions and make the best choice for your son. Good luck Sam
