Can degenerative changes occur in a fused segment?
In theory a non-moving segment should not deteriorate further after motion is stopped with a fusion. I am developing foraminal stenosis with nerve root involvement at a level that has been fused for 16 years and on top of that foraminotomies were performe 16 years ago making the foramen wide open.
Previous MRI's done 10 years ago showed wide open foramen. Recent MRI shows moderate-severe foraminal narrowing at one of my fused levels. I am fused at C-4 - T1 with the narrowing at C6-C7.
How can this be if the segment is fused?
Anyone else experience this?
