Cervical Stenosis with Spondylosis

Started by Jpie on 01/19/2010 11:28am

I am 44yrs old and have had lower back pain since my late teens. I have arthritis in the lower back and herniated discs. One year ago I received an MRI of my neck as I was having problems. I was found to have Congenital Small Cervical Spine and two discs were herniated. One year later I have pain in my shoulder blades, tingling and pain in my arms (which has progressed from an achy constant pain) and pain in my chest. I get these chest pains also that they say arent my heart, which Im very happy about. I am wondering if anyone has the same problem that I do and do they get the sharp pains in the left chest area along with the pain in the back and arms? I have to believe this pain is caused from the neck problems as there is no other reason but nothing Ive read on what I have mentions chest pain. I also have a hard time swallowing things at times. The surgeon Ive seen tells me that when the pain gets bad again to come back. Im assuming that not sleeping well because Im dreaming about the pain going on in my body and not getting any lower than a 4 on the pain scale is not a good enough reason to help me.

jpie. so sorry to hear about your pain. I have multiple degenerative issues in my neck and lower back. The neck problems have led to similar feelings in my arms and shoulders, not the heart stuff though.

definitely see a spine specialist to see what they can do. Good Luck!

hey jpie. i have the same symptoms. my pain started in left shoulder and have been on workman's comp and light duty at work for 4 mths. the company dr. decided to do another mri of my neck since the one of my shoulder didn't show anything. BINGO. what a mess it is. never had an injuty to neck that i know of. they tell me they usually only see it that severe when there's been a car accident or of the sort. i am going into surgery this next week. have done all the shots, therapy, etc and nothing works. pain is in the whole upper part of my body, including chest. not looking forward to surgery but i am some relief. good luck to you

Hi Jpie,
I am a 47 yr old with fusions at C4-5 and 5-6. I have multiple lumbar spine herniations. Do not suffer, have the surgery. I waited a year and it was unnessesary suffering. The surgery was a breeze and the pain was gone when I woke from anesthesia. FYI I did get the pain in my chest, but check it out with a good cardiologist and then you can feel safe. Remember that everyones pain scale if different. If your pain stops you from doing the things that you need to do tell your doctor. If he or she does not help you GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR! Also have you had your thyroid checked? If you have trouble swallowing that could be a factor. All of these problems seem to be inter-connected, your spine issues, thyroid, high BP, High lipids or cholesterol. Have all of these things checked. Good Luck!

Thank you for all your recommendations. I have been seeing my Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, Regular Dr, Heart Dr and had another MRI. I have now been told that I have Congenital Spinal Stenosis which is rare I guess since mine is on the very small side. Ever since I was a teen Ive had low back problems and when I was 23 my back went out and was told I had degenerative disc disease and arthritis. I blew it off and dealt with the pain as I had young children and didnt have time to slow down. Now my body has made me slow down. I will not be working any longer as I cannot even stand to sit for too long. It saddens me deeply as I have the kind of job that people only dream about that pays well and I enjoyed going to on a daily basis. I never dreamed of having to make time blocks during the day and make myself stick to it to do things or I will be no good for the next few days if I dont. Im too young for this and wonder what kind of life I have to look forward to. The Neurosurgeon showed me the herniation and told me that after I have the operation on my hips I need to come back and see him to have my low back operated on. If my life is going to be filled with surgeries I dont think I like the sounds of that. I was in a good place when I had the Cervical Spine operated on and did well with that. At this point I dont think three more invasive operations in the next year are something I can mentally handle. I think I will be adding another kind of Dr to my list before I go forward with anymore surgeries. Its become quite depressing to continue to get such bad news each time you see your Drs. For years I was told nothing was wrong and it was all in my head. Now i find out it isnt in my head and I have to wonder if Id have found these good Drs back then if Id have gotten this bad this quickly? I want someone to blame I guess for not listening to me for so long.

I can really relate to everything.. my pain story is a long one and yes, each time I turn around there is something else wrong.. this has been going on for over 15-18 yrs and I will be 42 soon. I was told they would never be able to find the root cause of all my pain by several Dr's.. all I wanted was answers.. never imagined it would turn out this way and now all I want is to turn back time.My list is upwards of 24 conditions and I was recently diagnosed with severe cervical stenosis. I have been disabled for 12 yrs and finally won my SSD last yr after 5 tries. I too have DDD and DJD only accelerated. Not to mention all the disks, facets, si joints, tailbone.. Ive been to nearly every pain clinic, surgeon, Dr.. tons of PT.. and as a result of being homebound I also have depression which has turned into major depressive disorder, agorophobia, severe social anxiety. I also discovered I suffer from Post Traumatic Brain Disorder and Migraines.. and to think it all started from Fibromyalgia. My pain specialist who finally diagnosed me closed his practice last year and I have been having a heck of a time finding another one. I was so distraught a few weeks ago I OD and woke up in the ICU on a Ventilator. The Dr's up there found another Dr and set me up an appointment only for me to go in and find out the guy was crazy, my opinion of course..

Sorry to go on and on about myself.. I just wanted to let you know I understand how you feel and wish you the best.. keep in touch..

Blessings, LMA

hi its hard to not worry about these pains and because its chronic your concentrating on the pain all the time,i have cervical stenosis, spondilosis in my spine aswell as collapsed vertabrae lower lumber and to top all that of i have steven johnstone syndrome which means i cant take pain relief,i must admit my pain is becoming more progresive now esp over the past month i was getting terrable pain in my chest, palpatations, and in alot off pain so i was put on heart monitor for 24hrs got results back my heart is racing but nomore, still the pain is here, the gp says its all part off my condition and because its a progresive one i will become more reliant on others to help me,the hardest part of having this conditions is its not like a broken bone with a stooky on it,no one can see your pain its very dibilitating.

HI Everyone, I am new here. I am a 49 yr old female. Long story short I had work injury where a 6ft long metal pole that I was working on hit my right sholder and gave me 10 stiches. They sent me to physical therephy after 12 rounds of that it did increase my range of motion however with exstreem pain. After a CT and 2 MRI this is what I have. Degenerative disc discasc with spondylosis and facct arthropathy at all cervical levels. A collapse and spondylosis at four levels of the C-3 to C-7 cervial regions. Protrusions approximate and the anterior cord at the C-5 to C-6, with potential impingement of the right fifth and sixth cervial roots. I can not lift my right arm but only half way, the pain is amazing, like lighting going all the way down my arm. No lower back pain, just sever neck pain the goes into my right sholder where I got hit, and sometimes numbness depending on how I move that day. I need narcotic pain meds just to make it through the day or I can not move. I am so sick of pills right now. I have been begging for a nerve block for weeks and they still will not give me one. This is work comp for you. Does any one here know in lamens terms please how can i get pain releaf and how does this get treated? So far the surgeion has not told me anything other than come back in couple of weeks. Are there any more test they can do? Anything info will help at this time. I do not understand what I have. All I know is I never had a problem before, then one day I get knocked up-side the sholder and now I have problems. Thanks all for listening to my story. I just do not understand what I have exactly.
