Advice for pre surgery c6/c7 acdf

Started by Vic39 on 03/01/2016 11:25am

I've finally got a date for surgery which is Tuesday 8th March. It has taken me a long time to get to this point so I'm happy that it's finally happening, I was just hoping for any last minute advice that anybody might have. My surgery is at the c6/c7.

Hi, Vic - I had acdf surgery 9/19/14 (C5-C7) and am so thankful that I did. You have a rough road to travel in the next several months, but I pray that you will have the strength and esp. patience to reach successful recovery. Here's my advice: follow your surgeon's instructions diligently, even if you think you can do more!! Your body will undergo a MAJOR assault from this surgery -- you will need far more rest than you anticipate. Full recovery will take longer than you expect. When the surgeon says recovery will take X no. of weeks, that represents surgical recovery, not necessarily your functional recovery. Rest as much as you can, for as long as you need it! After surgery, take your pain meds regularly for a few weeks to keep ahead of the post-op pain. Ask your surgeon to prescribe muscle relaxers - I found that muscle spasms were the cause of a majority of my pain for several weeks! Use ice and/or heat to help, too. Your throat will be extraordinarily uncomfortable since they will have to pull your esophagus, etc. aside to reach your spine. Have soft food on hand. Do not ever go to a chiropractor for neck pain again! The titanium plate is strong, but brittle ... it can break! You will have to figure out what your new "normal" lifestyle is, because acdf is the last resort in terms of treatment. Take care of yourself! I'm happy to report that my pain is 99% gone! So the surgery can and does work!! Best wishes for a successful surgery and recovery.

Hi bonnierae thanks for the advice it's great hearing from someone who has had success with this surgery because you read about so many people who haven't so it was very reassuring to hear from you. Yes I will follow all the drs advice to the letter. I will keep you updated on how I go.
