Disk replacement for c5

Started by joyce argieri on 08/23/2010 8:39pm

I am a 48 year old women who works in a maintenance dept. at a hotel, almost 2 years now i hurt myself at work and woke up to a numb hand and bad shoulder. A MRI shows a pinched nerve in my c5 and because it is a work injury in Canada we have Worksafe. they have been sending me to physio and then stopped to see what would happen. All the time i have met with the surgen who works for work safe and they want to do surgery? I am very frightened and don`t like the process but there is the option to a payout. Can anyone give me some advice??

Hello, I have bulging discs C3-C7 resulting in 40-50% stenosis at 4 levels. I also have an abnormal EMG and nerve conduction studies in both arms and hands. My spinal specialist advised me that surgery would not help and never to allow anyone to talk me into surgery. i'm currently in physical therapy but it seems to be making my pain worse. I think you should have the EMG and nerve conduction studies done first. If they are normal, then most likely the condition could improve with epidural steroid injection and physical therapy. I think surgery is a drastic option if you haven't had any of the above done first. My spinal specialist told me that fusions work best when done on only 1 level. I have 4 levels, he would not fuse my spine and to be honest, I was relieved that surgery was not an option. Also, if you are a smoker or drink lots of caffeine, you need to quit smoking and cut back on caffeine Good Luck to you, I hope you get relief from your pain soon

Hi, thanks for your advice, i have had both tests you mentioned and it is just my c5 that is pinching a nerve for my right hand. I have been going to physio for almost a year, took a break to see what wold happen and it did get worse and i also developed bad headaches , being it is a work injury they do want to push me for the surgery and physio does help. I have not heard or been told about injections only pushed to settle or have surgery. Very worried. thanks again.

I just had surgery on June 17, iliac grafts X7 so hip surgery as well as C2-7 grafts, fusion and decompression and a full plate C2 thru 7.. you know, it was the best thing I have done for me. Like many have said, the drug cocktails are not so great and I too have had allergic reactions to most drugs. I am lucky that my husband is very supportive and my rock, but the drugs don't work.... you are just creating more problems.... after my surgery I found immediate changes (and I have been dealing with this since the early 90's...) my best suggestion, get into some "blue water" programs - that warm water is healing.... keep moving, my biggest issues were my so called down days.... stay mentally active and physically do what you can... don't be a hero, if it hurts stop.... but most of all stay onto your doctor..... and I found with my doctor blatently saying, no stop writing prescriptions, they only mask what I am going thru really helped. I was falling, couldn't use my hands and terrified. this in my case was the right thing to do.

Thanks, a different view, i do swim and keep physical but what is blue water? I am only going to have 1 disk replaced so i am glad you are feeling better with all that you have written, thanks again,

Do the surgery now before your option is taken away from you! The pain will only get worse not better. You will soon have bone spurs to go along with bulging disc , choose to use a cadiver bone.

Most days yes i agree about the surgery, i am just wondering if you are from Canada and if you have maybe had this surgery, not sure if they want to fuse it or replace the disk. I am getting as much information as posible in order to decide. Thanks for you input as i do read all the comments.
