Anyone recover from a herniated disc (sciatic pain) without surgery?

Started by sciaticaisfun on 07/20/2010 7:11pm

Hi,

I was diagnosed with an L5 disc herniation and disc tear back in February 2010. I have been progressively getting better, but I'm curious to hear from people what their recovery trajectory was like (ex: did the pain start becoming reduced and then goes away? Would the pain just become more sporadic? how long did it take?)

The pain is still with me daily, but I would say it's in the 1-2 range. I'm currently seeing a chiro, using an inversion table, still doing mackenzie exercises, icing, topical creams, etc.

Thanks,

Ken

Keep doing all the right things like you've been doing. There's a god chance you can recover from it based on the level of herniation and if there been any extrusion, is of, how much.

And , Sciatica isn't fun :)

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

What was your inversion table routine. I"m doing it for about 10 min in the morning and about 10 min at night. Should I be trying to increase the time, or just work on increasing the inversion angle?

Thanks!!

I have an l5/S1 herniation. I have had Chiro / pt and these all have helped to a degree but i have seemed to hit a wall and cannot improve further. I am currently trying spinal decompression. My pain varies and no 2 days are the same which is frustrating. I also have pain level 1-2 days up to 5. I find i get stressed out from the day by day fluctuations of the pain and wonder how others handle that.

I had a herniated disc C5/C6. It was a pretty bad one. 8 months later, I still have pain when I try to do anything active. It's not excruciating pain like it was, but it's very bothersome. I suspect it's because I've been dealing with it so long. My friend, who is a cosmetic surgeon, had a herniated disc in the lumbar area just before mine. He advised me to "gut it out," that it would be absorbed by the body. MRI a week ago revealed it had done just that! I still have pain but knowing I have made such great progress, I can go on longer. I have been taking fish oil and doing Egoscue exercises. Don't know if that was the magic, but I don't believe it hurt. Good luck!

Like you, I'm curious if it will ever completely go away. I think they do take TIME. I'm not the most patient person in the world so it is a challenge. Some days I have almost no pain, so that gives me hope. Sounds like you are doing good things. I am still taking anti inflammatories and taking fish oil (my Japanese neighbor told me to do this). It was so encouraging for me to see the MRI I had taken in January and the one I just had done (September). Huge progress. Mentally it was a good thing for me to see.
I think I need to get my mind on something else. The disc herniation has dominated my life since it happened. Pretty hard to think of anything else. I am doing the elliptical and walking. And, I've lost 10 pounds on Weight Watchers (I think getting any excess weight off my frame should be helpful). Check outwww.egoscue.com It's basically postural exercises. I have an si joint problem that is about as annoying as the disc problem. This aging stuff is FOR THE BIRDS!
Hang in there!! I've noticed most things don't last forever.

It is encouraging to read the above posts. I have an L5-S1 herniaton and I have gone through Chiro, PT and recently 20 sessions of IDD therapy all with minimal results and about 3k out of pocket. I have just had my first epidural 2 days ago and i think it is working. My pain is not terrible but it is mind consuming and governs my daily activities. I have heard about and read about disc reabsorption and i am hoping in time the excess disc matter will be absorbed by my body and provide permanent relief although i am not sure that is totally achievable. I too am in the 1-2 range with an occasional 3 and i know that is not the worst by all means it is was it is. I have had an MRi in May so i cannot get another one for at least 6 months but i am hoping for an improvement, Good luck to all of us and please continue to share what works and doesnt work. Even though we all are different its important to share our experiences. You never know just what may just do the trick.

In 2004 I had a procedure called a nulceoplasty. Basically they tried to reduce the bulging in my L5 disk by making tunnels through the disk. It wasn't successful so I went the same path that your on.
So I took matters in my own hands. Since I had a good background in exercise physiology I developed
my on plan. I developed and exercise plan which may be similar to one you are using. This plan and walking 4 miles 3 times a week has given me a tremendous amount of relief, but I still need to be careful and not push it. It is easy when you are feeling better to over do it when attending to every day activities. That is a big mistake. You must always focus on good posture and lift correctly. Maintaining a proper weight and good nutrition are also very important. My website is backrepair.net. Please take a
look at it. I am not trying to sell you anything and I offer my plan for free to anyone who cannot afford it.
I have helped my friends and co-workers who have back problems, and that is how the website began. I wish you success with resolving your back pain and God bless.

Hi, all I know is I have a siciatic on my left side, it has been painful for 3 weeks, I do the simply exerizise my Dr. gave me. I do take meds as well. I can sit now for a little bit. I do believe surgery may not be necessary, I have had this for about 14yrs. but no pain after it was healed threw p/t, I tore my ham string, anyway. I was wondering my self how long the pain last? I hurt it this time going down a slide with my very large G.S.dog who weighs more then me, I guess thats what did it. I as well do the creams and icing. Take care.
