pars fracture in my 8th grade basketball/softball player

Started by cnails on 04/18/2011 11:38am

I am a JV girls basketball coach and have one of most promising young players thinking about not playing basketball because of a "pars fracture". I am seeking some information on this injury.

She initially created the injury during a softball game last summer. She is an excellent softball player and is already a varsity member as an 8th grader.

The fracture happened last June. She played softball on travel teams during the summer and rested when she could. When basketball season rolled around, her flare ups began again. It is our opinion that the injury never really healed. Apparently the fracture is complete so there is no "healing" that we know of.

Since basketball season ended she had rest and is competing very well in softball. She has had a couple of flare ups of pain but nothing serious.

She now is contemplating not playing basketball because she was in a lot of pain during basketball season and it has not hurt as much during softball.

My question: Can she still play basketball without any more chances of flare ups in basketball than any other sport? She is an excellent kid and has a great future in both sports. Any help you can give us would be appreciated.
