Collapsed discs C3-C7 - any hope?

Started by kathyy on 05/28/2015 5:17pm

Hi all. Need some help please. First, just a bit of history.

First, years ago when I was 15 I was in a horrible car accident. Extreme whiplash. So I have always dealt with neck pain and have a home traction set. The pain has been manageable and until the last 6 months, has gotten better. I am 63 and up until 7 years ago, still was a runner

Suddenly I woke up one day in huge back pain. Ended up I had to have a fusion L4-L5 due to spondylolisthesis, grade 3 and quickly advancing neurological problems with legs. I had a huge cyst removed and surgery which left tons of scar tissue, I have a spinal cord stimulator.

Fast forward to 6 months ago when i was convinced I was having a heart attach due to pain in chest, jaw, arm etc. After a month on a heart monitor and extensive pulmonary testing my cardiologist advised me to get off methadone. I have been in pain management since my fusion and took 5 mg methadone and up to 3 - 7.5 mg hydrocodone. So, I decided to stop ALL pain meds. It has been hell but I have been off pain meds for several months.

Because of the lack of pain meds, I could more easily identify my "chest" pain as coming from my neck and pain management doc ordered CT scan since I can't have MRI. (spinal cord stimulator)

Result of scan is awful. I have no disc left in my neck. Enormous osteophytes everywhere. "Severe" degenerative disc disease but no sign of arthritis. My weird symptoms now extend to my lower face neck, arms fingers, and into my feet. Not pain like by lower back but tingling, burning, numbness and weakness. Not much
cord compression but nerve compression and discs glow bright white on scans compared to rest of vertebrae. Currently I have had 2 epidural injections in neck but not very helpfu.

Is there even anything surgically that could be done for so much damage in my neck? Does anyone have a similar situation they could share?
