Weak legs came on suddenly, can barely walk

From: Kasey443 - on 04/24/2010 1:42pm

I am new here, and looking for anybody with similar problem who may know the cause of this. I have over 30 years back problems, laminectomy 10 years ago, DDD, facet arthritis, now recently had MRI and they found 2 bulging disks, the one at L 2-3 is bulging and pinching on a nerve. I had 2 injections 12 days ago, one was ESI, for the bulging disk, the other not sure what its called, for the chronic low back pain from the facet arthritis. I was doing better, just standing at kitchen counter when I could feel both legs from knees on down getting weaker and weaker. I could barely walk, still can't, and went to the ER. I need help walking. Doc checked me over, asked all kinds of questions about my back and leg history, prescribed anti-inflammatory meds, and a walker, and told me to see my doc on Monday. Does anybody know what this is and what caused it? I forgot to tell you I was on my feet yesterday about an hour shopping ( something I could not normally do without pain ) and did have some pain in my low back come on, but was still ok last night. This came on this morning with no notice, after I was up a couple of hours. I feel like my feet are dead weight. When doc put her hand under each and told me to push, I had absolutely nothing in the right one ( side pinched nerve is on ) and very little to nothing in the left. Thankyou for any info.

Hi Kasey, I'm Deja and I have sumthing similiar that happens to me. It began march 21st of last year. I'm not prone to having any sort of leg pain or weakness. But out of the blue, at 11 am, I began to get this heavy, sluggish feeling in my legs. Within an hour, my legs were weak, I couldn't countrol my leg muscles, felt like I had a bad case of cerebral palsy. Went to instacare after work 5 hours later cuz it was still going on in both legs. I had no idea my "weak walk" was due to my back. The dr sent me to the hospital for a mri of my brain (to rule out MS) and my lumnar region. First times ever having mri's. I went to a waiting room after my mri's to wait for the dr to call me with the results. The dr called and told me my brain mri was great, but my lumbar mri was not. He told me I was going to need back surgery. I had severe spondylolisthesis which resulted in severe bilateral foraminal stenosis which caused significant bilateral root nerve compression at the l5/s1 level which due to the compression of my nerves, was causing my legs to weaken and my abnormal gait, along with the foraminal stenosis. I hope this helps:)

I had the same thing. My legs became so weak I could hardly walk. I have spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I had three series of injectio ns in my back plus I take cymbalta for the nerve pain, generic requip for RLS and generic ambien. The injections helped to take the numbness, tinglingly, pain and the unability to walk away. I hope this stays away. I actually had such bad back pain 2 weeks ago unlike I ever felt before and here it was just some pulled tight back muscles. Good luck.

Theresa that's wonderful that u found relief!!! I had two spinal injections...the first took my pain away after a week but my weak legs and abnormal gait remained. Still could not control my legs. Walking up and down stairs would trigger my "gimpish walk" along with going up and down inclines, bending, or walking.

Thankyou everybody for replying to me. I did not have my subscriptions set right, and still do not know how to set them, so I did not know I had replies. I went to my PM doc on Monday and it was a complete waist of time. She saw me sitting in a wheelchair, checked my legs and feet, still barely any strength at all, said it she didn't think it was that serious because I can feel I guess ( can't walk or stand for 5 seconds, then asked if I wanted to try physical therapy??!! I cannot say here what really went through my head at that moment, but I was firm and said NO, I am not doing physical therapy for a problem that we do not even know the cause of. I had to insist on seeing a neuro, then they called with an appt. a month and a half away, I am NOT taking it as I am not laying around that long! I am disgusted with the stupidity of some docs and am going to dif. one today. I have had to use a walker to get around for 6 days and cannot stand for 5 seconds without my legs going out on me. I do know that stenosis normally comes on slowly, and did not know the injections only have a 50% success rate, and the damage ( although rare ) that they can cause. They worked wonders for my weak legs in the past, and for my facet arthritis, but I think this last set of 2 may have done my back in from what I have read. Wish me luck today! I will check back but am not sure when I will be back on. Thanks again to all of you for replying to me with your own stories.

Oh kasey, I'm so sorry!!! How frustrating and disappointing!! I understand going to a dr, and wanting concrete reasons for why we are experiencing what we are and to develop a treatment plan to resolve the issues!! Plz keep me updated as to how ur new dr appt goes!!! I hope this one far surpasses ur last experience with ur previous dr!! Have a great day:)

Hi Kasey, are you taking any cholesterol lowering med's? They can cause problems with your muscles in your legs too. My last injection was May of 2008, if the leg issue stays away I'll be a very happy person. Maybe change dr's. Also did you see an arthritus dr sometimes they offer insight too.

Hi everybody and thankyou for your replies. I have been having a bad time, and unable to even be on here. The very next day I went to the Mayo clinic in Rochester ER because the weakness moved up into my thighs, and I wasn't feeling right either. They checked me over very very well, ER doctor, then had ortho and neuro come down and check me. Said I have spinal compression, were going to do MRI, and by the time they got done, I had been there 9 hours ( ER was swamped that one day ) so I waited 4 hours just to get in. By the time they were all done, no time to do the MRI, said neuro would be calling me cos he wanted to see me. Came back home, next few days started feeling terribly weak and exausted, head rushes when I laid down. I felt like I was going to pass out and had no energy to even get out of bed. Went to ER here, Blood pressure was 165 over 91, very high for me, They put me on IV, did brain scan ( one that only takes 2 min., and no dye injected ) checked my blood and urine etc., said all came out OK except I was dehydrated, told them I was going to bathroom WAY more, lips and teeth tingling, exausted all the time etc. They took the IV out early, sent me on my way as USUAL, and told me to drink water and gaterade. I then read up on what I have and found out dehydration comes on as a problem with this. What is going on with these doctors where I live???!!! I am trying to find a patient advocate. Doc here said she could do MRI and other tests BUT since I want to go to Mayo clinic, she claimed they would just do them over again. I am at my wits end. I use a walker to get around, and can barely do anything, and the doc here apparently didnt think it was serious??? when she called mayo to make my appt. because they called with an appt. a month and a half away and I said I need one sooner, this came on suddenly within seconds. Anybody have any ideas of what I can do, who I can call? This is the reason I do not want any more medical care where I am at, I have gotten no help, they send me home, and do not do any tests because I want to go to a neuro. at mayo clinic. PS, I just started on cholesterol meds! About the same time this happened! Ty for the info!

Kasey have you become worse since being on the cholesterol med's? Also what kind of cholesterol lowering drugs are they? My cardiologist will not put me on any cholesterol lowering drugs because of the side effects. I too have back pain still. Check into your med's online then confront the dr ordering the medicine. Grant it your spine problem needs to be addressed. Have you tried fish oil, flax seed and some other natural rememdies to help lower cholesterol. Your cholesterol could also be high because your not able to be active to bring levels to a healthy number. Good luck!

Deja, thankyou so much for your story. It does sound so similar to mine. I see you got treatment early and I am so happy for you. I am making phone calls tomorrow and getting the ball rolling on my own. To everybody else, I will look into the side effects of that med I am on, now I am really wondering about it. I believe I have gotten worse since on them. I started them 2 days after this incident, and I am very dehydrated. I know it has nothing to do with my legs, my legs have been a problem, cramping, for years now, but the faintness, and floating feeling and tingling lips and extreme tiredness were not any symptoms untill the last 3 days. About when I started that med. Is that a side effect??? i will stop it immediately if it is!

Oh my gosh, I just went and read the side effects of the cholesterol lowering med. I am on. I have too many to stay on it. The doc told me changing my eating doesnt lower it enough but it would help, since I can't exercise right now. THIS is a good example of why I do not care to go to the doc where I live. It is one thing after another. The ER here didn't even make a connection. I am tired of being my own doctor. Now if I can just do my own surgery, I will have it made!

Hi Kasey, I am glad to see that you did read up on the med's. I always felt like I had run a marathon. I couldn't even walk up a set of steps to get into a ranch home Pravastatin was the last drug I tried and still the bad muscle weakness and pain. I would think that the dr who put you on the med's should be the one tohelp you. I have been going thru this for a little over 4 years so I have some experience. Best wishes Kasey, I hope you feel better soonn.

Kasey it was march of LAST year that my lweg symptoms began. I lived with it for 11 months before bwing able to have surgery. I'm so glad u were proactive and read the side effects of ur medication!!!! It IS too bad when we have to do our own research to connect the dots, but at least u may have found your answer!! Take care and good job!!:)

Thankyou Theresa and Squirtatious for your help. I have checked subscribe to this discussion below these and I do not get any notices still. I had no idea people had to wait that long to have surgery for this! I cannot walk without a walker! My left leg turns out and is VERY weak, it gives out at the knee, the right is a little better than left. I lived with cramps in my calves at night for years, and weak legs, that injections did help in the past. Now I can only walk with a walker, and spend alot of time in bed, sitting for awhile bent forward is ok, but then I have to lay down, or keep changing positions. Atleast I could walk before, I cannot now. I have an aide that will be coming in to help me, I can really do very little at all! I don't understand why docs don't get a person in right away and get this taken care of???? How do people get by? I cannot cook, clean, shop, do laundry, and just yesterday got to wash my hair sitting in a chair in the tub! Will keep you updated on what I find out today with my phone calls. Ty again

Ok, I finally am getting the notices on the replies here. I went to the doc today, I said I would take anybody available. This one listened to what's been going on, and ordered MRI with contrast of brain ( to check for MS ) I knew this was why, she didn't tell me, of my neck ( bone spur in there ) and of my low back with contrast also, because I have all those other symptoms that came on and also told her about mayo saying I have spinal cord compression. Then said she would call Mayo. I now have an appt. at Mayo in one week. I get the results of my tests tomorrow. I am terrified. It is the other symptoms that came on that scare me. Thankyou everybody for your support.

Got my results and good so far on the brain scan so I was very relieved about that. I do have moderate stenosis lumbar, and also stenosis in my neck. The new symptoms that came on are caused by me having to use this stupid walker. I struggle to use it outside or get into a vehicle and now am paying for it. I need a wheelchair. My muscles in my upper back and neck are hard as a rock and have caused me terrible dizzy spells, light headedness, weakness in my arms, numb fingers, I felt like I was losing it. Doc didn't know the cause, I had to figure it out for myself. I had experience with these exact same symptoms years ago after whiplash in a car accident. I had to go to PT for months to fix it. I felt my own shoulder blade and neck and was shocked at how hard they were and when I pressed, it brought on the exact symptoms I have been having. I am working on myself with a tennis ball ( while laying down ) untill I get to Mayo on Monday. It looks like I may need surgery for my legs, from what I have read. The doc here doesn't deal with this so she just told me what the radiologist report said, I will get a full one when I go Monday. Thanks everybody for listening to me!

I am not a doctor but you might want to be checked for spina bifida or fluid on your spine.

Thankyou for the well wishes. I am back from Mayo and the neuro. checked me over very very well and asked tons of questions. Then ordered more tests, ones that had not been done by the place I live at. So far, still do not know the reason. I had MRI of T-spine this morning, and many more blood tests. I have an EMG on the 18th. If they find no reason for this, I am guessing it may be MS. I have been asked by people if I was checked for that after telling them my symptoms. I have no lesions, but found out a person can have an episode with no lesions, so they rule everything else out first, then check you again in 6 months. So they are checking everything to do with my spine and bloodwork first. Then the neuro. may call me, and I also have an appt. with the spine clinic in June. So right now, I still know nothing. Thankyou for listening to me and being there for me. I will keep you updated.

Kasey,
Sorry you have had to go through all this. It must be terrifying for you. I have had back problems for 7 years and just had 4 Medial Facet Injections that made my back worse.
My MD also wanted to put me on cholesterol medications but as a former RN I told him I wanted to do diet change and herbal/vitamins. I know many people who have used these supplements and have dropped their cholesterol numbers considerably. I have been taking them for 2 months now and go back in June for a blood level recheck. Since I started the supplements I have felt better overall except for the severe pain in my back so hopefully they are working.

Hi Kim and thankyou for replying. Could you tell me what supplements you are trying? I cannot be on here long, and am having trouble knowing which ones to try, there are way too many natural ones out there, but that is what I was trying to research. I am still afraid I may have MS or something that mimicks it. I seem to have the symptoms and have been asked by a few people if I was checked for it. A brain scan was done, 2 in fact, and I was told there were no lesions, but I found out there do not have to be any with the first episode. I noticed I am very very slowly getting better also, which does not go with the back problems I have had in the past. I have more weakness and tiredness than pain. I cannot exercise, but can change my eating habits and take supplements. I do go back to Mayo for what I think is my last test on the 19th of this month, then consult. with the neuro., then to the spine clinic and will find out their opinion and diagnosis then. Thankyou for any info.

I'm sorry to hear about your back pain Kimber. What has helped with your pain since the injections did not work? The only thing that helped my low back pain from facet arthritis were the injections, and laying in a nice warm tub. Damp heat always seemed to work well, I hope you can get some relief.

Hi! I am not so sure this will help but I have a similar story but a little backwards. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 5/00 having problems with my legs feeling heavy, I described this as heavy blocks on my feet. I couldn't lift them this would come and go but contstantly something going on. I had numbness and pain in my legs and arms mostly on the right side. I had back trouble at the time of diagnosis which I was given Medication to help with the main concern was ms. I went to chiropractors, and pain management doctors. I have had massage, accupuncture, I have done natural medications. It has been a long nad very hard road, to say the least. I was 28 when I was diagnosed with this devestating disease. Since the diagnosis I have been in the hospital numerous times on heavy steroids. This never seemed to work in addition I was given novantrone a chemotherapy for the obvious progress of the ms. After being in the hospital and it was so obvious that the meds were doing more harm than good, oh did I mention the shot that I took at home that made me terribly ill? I stopped everything and started taking natural meds. I go better and quick. I didn't have any more relapses that extreme. I have however had to get a couple of treatments here and there but not to this extreme. I have been feeling horrible lately and still struggling with horrible back pain. No one has ever found this problem and I have had numerous mri's but I had to go to the hospital due to back pain and legs, etc.....they did an mri and found that I have degenartive disk disease, spinal stenosis, arthritis, bone spurs I had to see a surgeon and quick due to the severity and now I am having surgery in just a couple of days, yikes! I have also been told that it is possible that this wa sthe problem all those years ago and maybe, just maybe it wasnt ms at all......hmmm, so you have to wonder what next? Was I diagnosed correctly? Did the steroids cause the arthritis. So many questions. I know I really explained my story but when I read your post I thought about me in the beginning before this diagnosis. Have you been checked for MS? If not you might mention it to your doctor. Good luck with everything I know how painful this is!

Hi Tam, thankyou for your story. I believe I have been checked for MS as I had a brain scan with contrast, no lesions. I also had a lumbar with contrast which showed moderate stenosis and arthritis, an MRI of my neck, which showed moderate to severe stenosis, and I do not have the results yet of my mid back MRI or the numerous blood tests they took at Mayo which I will get Tuesday and Wednesday when I go back. I am glad you found the cause of your leg symptoms and hope you keep searching for the cause of your back pain. I also like to know what is going on with my own body and why, so I research everything I can. What I have come across about my symptoms has me wondering if my numerous trips to the dentist are not the culprit as I had just started going about 4 months before this started, and had my last one 2 days before this all came on. The symptoms I have can mimic MS, but also be caused by mercury fillings. So I guess I will wait and see what the results of my other tests are. I am still using a walker, but very slowly getting better, it has been almost a month since this started. I was assuming this was MS but also found that even with no lesions, they wait for your 2nd episode to diagnose you. I hope not, I would really hope it has a cause and treatment. Interestingly, the same year dentists started using mercury for fillings is the same year MS symptoms seemed to come out and people were diagnosed with it. I will keep you updated. Thankyou

I don't know, Kasey. Not a doctor here, but to me it sounds like stenosis could be the whole cause of the weak legs thing. Did they think yours wasn't severe enough from looking at the MRI to cause this? Personally, I would be very surprised if this is due in any way to the mercury fillings.
