Help, worried and scared of new MRI readings

Started by nanalee on 02/03/2010 8:51am

Hello, I am new to the board, I am 50 yrs old and have had neck pain since 1992, recently I had a 3 level ACDF(2009)C4 to C7, since my surgery I have difficulties swallowing at times thyroid is swollen, I still have the pins and needles(numbness)feelings in my arms down to my hands and burning pain between my shoulder blades as well as severe headaches, newest MRI shows intervertebral neural foramina on the right side moderate foraminal narrowing due to vertebral body osteophyte, most pronounced at C4/5, left side moderate foraminal narrowing is present from C5/6 to C6/7,advise clinical correlation for possible left C6 and right C5 radiculopathy compared to the pre-op study, foraminal narrowing is essentially unchanged from the previous exam, there has been increased posterior disc protrusion/herniation at C3/4 with indentation of the thecal sac and mild flattening of the spinal cord, the broad-based posterior disc protrusion at C3/4 shows extension of disc material superiorly behind the C3 vertebral body with mild central indentation of the thecal sac, my surgeon says my MRI does'nt look that bad (grrrrrr)and he is sending me for a EMG and Nerve Conductivity tests for carpel tunnel, I had those tests in 2006 and no carpel tunnel, I am scared, but wondering if I will need surgery again, very frustrated and tired of the pain, any imput will be greatly appreciated, sorry post was so long, thanking all in advanced

read the post that says " Whats it going to be like after surgery" Not exact qoute but read the answer it pretains to you and everyone else considering surgery. Surgery to day seems to be a big racket for the Drs. Thats what my Sister inlaw (who's a nurse ) thinks and so do I.

Im new to this site and saw your posting. What kind of surgeon did you use for your neck surgery? I had a hard time swallowing for about a year after my surgery, I had to be careful eating bread, steak etc... I had an anterior disection between 5 and 7. Cant remember what the medical term was but the bone in the neck had deteriated. I ended up getting cadavor bones and a plate in my neck and havent had a problem since. I had an orthopedic surgeon do mine, thats why I was curious as to yours.

Hello froglady09, Thank-you for your response,I had a neurosurgeon do my surgery, I truly believe my pain stems from the C3/4 disc herniation and neural forminal narrowing, totally frustrated these days got my appointment for the nerve conductivity test and emg, for july 16th, I have asked my MD to call this specialist or contact my surgeon for an earlier appt or a referral to a different specialist, I really fear having nerve damage and waiting for tests for another 5 months that may tell my doc what is going on so he can fix it is unacceptable to me anyway, running out of time to get back to my job. Will post updates. Thanks again for all posts
