Dealing with pain after burst fracture of spine in 1998, also suffered head injury.
My accident was in 1998, first hospital I was brought to, I was told I just had a small injury to my back, nothing to worry about, sent me home, told me to take Tylenol. Each day, my pain got worse along with all the symptoms...numbness, tingling, no control of bowel or bladder. I knew it was time to find out what was going on. I went to my local primary Dr who sent me directly 60 miles away for an MRI. Had the MRI, and by time we got back home there was a message on my machine to call the Dr asap. I was told I had a Burst fracture of the spine and was to get to another hospital ( another 62 miles away), they would be waiting for me, I had to have emergency surgery. At that time, I was told that my scar would be approx. 1-2 in. And surgery would probably only be 30-45minutes. Well 81/2 yrs later and a 1-2 in scar had become 2 radical scars where I was cut in half, from belly button to around the other side of my ribs. Once they opened me up, they found only 10% of my spine was stable. They used metal plates, screws, parts of my hip, even took out 2 of my ribs to put my spine back together. 5 months later, I was still in the hospital, in the rehab dept., trying to learn how to walk again. The pain was unbearable. The nerve in my left leg (groin area) had to be moved around so much during surgery, that was now damage, and to this day, I can't even touch that spot. If I go out in the heat, that area of my leg down to my knee will turn reddish purple and swell, same as with the cold weather. I want you to know that I consider myself very fortunate because after almost 2 yrs later...I was walking again. I just can't handle the constant pain, can't do anything I once was able to do., which has made me depressed also. I see a neurologist every month who has brought me a long way. I just want to know if there's someone that deals with pain like this and what do you do about it? The pain to me feels raw...like Each day I just was cut
open. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I cacan't take this much longer.
