Narcotic Agreements

From: sickofneckpain - on 09/19/2010 3:58am

So I am wondering how to deal with a situation! I have had chronic neck and shoulder and back pain for 4-6years and I was taking 15mg oxycodone four times a day and flexiril every night!! It was just getting me through the day so I can take care of my 6 and 2yr old. So I finally started seeing a pain management specialist and they gave me all these different meds. to try and ultram made me sick cymbalta made me sick allergic to Savella (for Fibro)and Lyrica doesn't work! So They then had me on the same 15mg oxy and subutex 1mg every night for pain. Then I had facet joint injections with no luck and then when they went to do a monthly UA it tested positive for THC which I am a casual user. They then said here is 5 tablet of oxy and we can NOT prescribe to you anymore!!! So I then discontinued their office and went back to my reg pcp who was prescribing to me for the last 4-6yrs, and she said since I used THC now she can not prescibe to me either so the past month I have been suffering with NO meds for pain when I was on like 3!!! So how can a Dr. dictate to me what I do in my spare time? I have NEVER been a drug seeker and am not and Addict but I am being treated like one!! So does anyone know if you do have a green card for medical reasons can you still be treated with meds.???? I find this very frustrating that someone can tell me what I can and can't do if it been legal for pain

Do you find this discussion helpful?

I guess you're new to this form. 5 months ago we did a lot of talking on this. That was me three times a week. Then they put me on morphine 200 mg twice a day time release plus breakthrough morphine pain meds. I had to work I couldn't remember anything I was on it for two months.

That's when I quit drinking completely FEB 1 2010. You keep going to different doctors and someone will give you hydrocodone. Stay negative they will give you Percocet you can't crush. If you read all my postings I seem kind of cookie-cutter I`m not. I'm truly here to help people. Good luck Sam

I am in the same exact situation right now. I feel your pain. I tested positive for codeine that I had gotten over-the counter in Europe, however, it is banned in the US. Go figure! I was totally confident taking my urine test.that was my second time so they dropped me.
I called other pain management and they want records from my pcp and prior pain doc. This sucks. Will they take me if I failed a drug test? I was thinking of lying and starting all over with a new MRI but will they find out I lied? I made one mistake and then treated like a common criminal. The staff in my pain management office was condecending anyway so I hope I find a better office.
I take my medication for pain Only. Some of us really suffer from severe pain
good luck to you! I hope you can work it out.
keep us posted

There are pain clinics that will work with you and let you prove yourself once again. You just have to be patient and look for them. Also, if you were to live around Houston, Texas, they have doctors that give out meds very easily. Not sure of their names cause I have never been, but they have "pill mills" as they call them. I know of someone who says after your initial visit, you can just go into the window, tell them you need a refill on your meds and they fax the prescription to the pharmacy. You have to use their choice of pharmacy and the prescription has to be faxed by the office. All is cash and it is legal right now. You would have to file your own insurance to get reimbursed. I myself think it is very wrong and illegal, but sometimes when you are in pain, you will do almost anything to ease that pain. Good luck to you all.

Update I finally found a new Pain Center for for chronic neck pain that actually treats me like a patient not a drug addict!!! They have me back on my meds. and also said that if I have a green card for Medicinal marijuana they will still treat me!! Thank the Lord finally some one who makes sense! Since it is proven to help with pain and fibro and it is legal for that purpose!!!

DEAR SICKOF...ONCE YOU COME UP WITH ANYTHING NOT PRESCRIBED TO YOU, YOU ARE RED FLAGGED. THIS MEANS ALL YOUR DOCTORS SHUT OFF YOUR PAIN MEDS. IT HAPPENED TO MY BROTHER. BAD BACKS AND NECKS RUN IN OUR FAMILY (WE NEVER RUN OUT OF CONVERSATION AT FAMILY GATHERINGS, IT'S A "WHO'S TRIED --- BEFORE?) HE STARTED SMOKING POT FOR A COMBO SLEEP/EAT. HE HAS NO APPETITE AND CAN'T SLEEP DUE TO CHRONIC PAIN. HE WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT (NOT HIS FAULT) AND AT THE HOSPITAL A URINE TEST REVEALED POT. HE WAS RED FLAGGED. NO MORE PAIN MEDS. I SUGGEST GOING TO A PSYCHIATRIST. TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH COULD BE PASSED FROM YOUR PSYCH DR TO YOUR PAIN DR. MAYBE THIS COULD REMOVE YOUR RED FLAG. IT'S WORTH A TRY. CHRONIC PAIN IS AWFUL AND BEING SHUT OFF CAUSES EMOTIONAL PAIN AS WELL AS THE PHYSICAL. TAKING CARE OF 2 SMALL CHILDREN IS HARD ENOUGH, LET YOUR TEARS OUT...MY PRAYERS TO YOU, AND WISHING THE BEST.

Hello im new to this site but I know how you feel! I damaged my sciatic nerve over 5 years ago and the journey of medications never seemed to end! I take oxycotin and oxycodone this is only after the doctors at the indian hospital said they were putting me on methadone! I sought other options. Now that Im her visiting my children I was told by medicare that I could get my perscriptions filled here in austin texas but I guess the great state of texaswont accept my prescriptions the doctor sent tome from south dakota?! I was on a contract for medication but when I moved to custer I did not have to sign one. Even though I dont smoke pot my neurologist told me to vote for medical weed! He said that pot is safer for my organs than downing all the pills! SInce I have been here my doctor in south dakota was allowed to call in and fax a script for hydrocodone 5/325 to get me by till I get home! what I was taking in south dakota just took the edge off the pain now I feel the full effect of the damage im just glad texas allows me the hydrocodone! The drug contracts need to only watch for the meth heads and the hard core druggies I dont understand why they come down so hard on people who smoke a little pot?! I hear it really does help with the pain!? and I hear this from doctors who tell me vote so what does that say for the govt!!!! Its sad to say but it only takes a few to mess it up for all of us! What they did to you by not giving you your meds for pain relief constitute cruel and unusual punishment in my book! Would they let a dog or animal suffer like you are now?! No because they would have PETA on their ass! you are not a drug seeker your body got use to the drugs and it kinda balanced your pain out but when they took them away they basically shocked your system kinda like getting shot or stabbed! I wish you luck with everything but getting a doctor to help is gonna be hard they are like a click of bitchy little girls and texas seems to have the worst of these clicks!

Yes I know it is Absolutely ridiculous that they just said here's 5 pills when I was on 4 a day and see ya! But in the end I ended up with a way BETTER pain clinic!! yes they ALL do UA's which is fine because this time I asked my DR. if I have a Green card Rx for medicinal Marijuana for pain from Fibro and spasms can they still perscribe me my pain meds.? She said YES that is fine as long as you have a green card. So Happy that WA at least has it going in the right direction. I might add that I did all the research for a new Dr. on my own including faxing my own records and finding out everything on my own Also I can't believe how much releif I have gotten since this new office switched me from reg. 15mg oxycodone every 4hr to the controlled release oxy 30mg every 6hr which I was on the same amount But having 24hr releif compared to only 12hr has made a HUGE difference!!! But there again it's taken 1 1/2yrs to get here, as they never even tried the contin probably because all these drug seekers who just crush it and abuse it. So patients who would benifit from this med. are not getting it because of All the other's!! It is crazy because a drug addict will still find their drugs no matter what but a real patient has the hardest time!!! But YAY I finally have gotten releif and I can legally use marijuana for my pain even if it has a stigma GET OVER GOVT.!!!! Hope you all find a good dr.! Good luck!!

we feel your pain also. the same thing happens here only alittle different scenario......from my experiences what i thought would be good information to tell my dr's turned out to RED flag me too. i have serious lumbar pain after yrs of truck driving and hard labor.
i am also sober for 7 years.
you would think telling this to a doctor would be good right? nope.....they then play advocate for you, hmmmm.....maybe you should just take OTC instead of narc due to your past. NO TRUST. haven't i just told him i have been sober 7 yrs?!?!?! does it mean nothing? i guess i can just keep on suffering and be treated like a seeker and an idiot! thanks doc! urghhhh...........what can i do now????

I am under a pain contract...the ONLY thing I get tested for are narcs. Thats it! I can get all kinds of muscle relaxers, nerve pills-you name it. And I am not in violation of my contract. The only problem I have had is when I had my foot operated on-couldn't get any extra help with THAT pain..but got thru things ok...just some extra pain that went away after a couple weeks

to "sick of neck pain"

What do you mean by your second to last sentence: "So does anyone know if you do have a green card for medical reasons can you still be treated iwth meds. ????"

If you answer that, I may have some ideas to get your pain treated legally. In the meantime, no pot and no booze because they often stay in the body for long time. I think it's a DEA rule now that all pain-clinic patients have a urinalysis every month. They raise hell if you don't have any evidence of the prescribed medication(s) in your urine because they want to know what you've done with the drugs.

Hang inr there.

There are so many of you Guys out there that say pot is great for pain. I really don`t know much about pot only that it is away to get HIGH. I think people who want to do drugs shouldn`t waste our doctor`s time. You can just smoke and be rid of your pain on your own. I take a lot of pain meds the way the dr. says to take them. I don`t and never would be high on not legal drugs. I have a kid that works for me that Tells us he is not a addict. But HE IS HIGH all the time. (Says I`m on drugs not him). People that use DRUG`s say they only use things for fun get to be Addict`s. I bet all you pot smoker`s are addict.`s Please see if you can live 2 week without. If you can`t your a Drug addict. Let us all know I bet you all that are smoker`s are addict`s Good luck and it`s to bad Maybe we all would be pain free if we were HIGH 24/7.

TO Sam... First of all It is legal in my state to Use medicinal marijuana for pain and I Do have an auth. for it so it is legal for me actually!! 2nd it truly does help with pain but pain meds. and that work together especially for sleeping so maybe you should research the facts and quit judging people how they choose to get tx. I did find a Dr. who accepts the use for pain as long as it has been approved and I Still do my UA every month and don't don't use any other drugs but thanks...

Your doctors need to know EVERYTHING you take or use in order to safely prescribe medications for you. You need to be up front with the doctor from the very first meeting. If you smoke pot and have a green card, that should be disclosed during your intake assessment. Same for any other drug, OTC medication, supplement, herbs, etc. It may seem silly to list every tylenol/motrin/vitamin/etc that you take, but it is important. I have worked for several doctors over the years and there is a big difference in how we deal with someone who tests positive on a drug test if we know they will because they were upfront, or if they denied drug use. Every patient I have ever interviewed for an initial assessment or admission has been asked about drug and alcohol use. If someone lies, they are asking for trouble. If someone says that they drink 4 beers and smokes a joint every day, we make a note of it and prescribe medications with that in mind. Some drugs and alcohol can have major interactions with medications. Always be honest and upfront and you should not have the problems you will face if you get caught in a lie.

Sorry Sam, but I have to disagree with the comment about pot not being for pain but to just get high. I'm on a butt load of pills prescribed by PM but those pills don't work anymore because I'm not willing to let PM increase my morphine, which will end up killing me in the long run. I smoke my pot almost every night to help ease me into the painless state where I can actually sit here and type and do what I do on the computer without having to get up every 10 minutes. We actually don't call it "pot", we call it medication because it works. I get an all over body tingle which actually makes my muscles relax, which inturn stops my back from being in spasm. I have my mental capacity and am not tired at all, just at ease. It's all in the strains of the marijuana. There are people who like their Indica because it helps them get high, and there are people who like their Sativa because it gives you mental and physical capacities with out the high feeling. Most strains out there are a cross mix of both and have different percentages. If I find myself not being able to lay down comfortably, I get up and find the one that I know helps me relax completely, twenty minutes later I'm sound asleep like a rock until the alarm goes off in the morning without any hangover that I'd get from strong sleep aids or hitting the liquor cabinet.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to rant on you, I'm just tired of having to figure out when my next piss test is gonna be and suffering through the week before just to pass the test. Some people are really against marijuana because of the way we were raised believing that marijuana was a gateway drug and that we could overdose on it and it'll kill you! It's not a gateway drug, you can't overdose, and infact I've seen real life studies on the miracles of marijuana with cancer treatments and it heals you, not kill you. You don't have to smoke it, you can eat a cookie, candy, spaghetti sauce, or drink a tincture of it. My mom was soooo against marijuana until I talked to her about it and admitted what I was doing and she found out that my aunt was treated in her last years with marijuana to help her be comfortable in her dying days....it actually extended her life a year past what the doctor gave her. She got to spend more time with her husband and kids. Now my mom is one who supports the medical marijuana cruisade I'm involved with.

There is a drug out there called "marinol", not sure about that spelling but it's a thc in pill form and there are doctors out there who will prescribe it. You'd blow the piss test but you'd have a script for it and PM can't say shishcabobs about it. I've been doing my studying with help from hubby.

Wendi, I`m glad you are still out there It would be much nicer if you were not in pain anymore. I`m in pain so much always since my surgery. Now I can`t do much work anymore my life is going down hill fast. I`m going to PM in the morning. I know It`s time for blocks again. Have you ever tried SCS ? I will see what they think on that for me.

Hi sickofneckpain!

I am am a pain sufferer myself. And I. too, use the marijuana. I have been mostly pill free for 4 months but spend about 200 bucks a month(illegally) on the green stuff. It is amazing how well it works! Like Wendi said about the different strains. Right on Wendi. I have 3 different stains to choose from. I call the nappy, happy, and floaty! I hope to the heavens MN legalizes medicinal soon. I am so jealous of those of you that can grow your own medicine. How cool is that?

Are you all getting urine tests because you are on workmans compensation? I am and I get a urine test so I'm very careful what I take. I was really upset when I had to meet with the health office at my job and the NP that saw me accused me of not really being in pain and being addicted to the hydrocodone that is prescribed to me by my doctor and that barely even helps my pain.

I am facing the same problem.I have had several surgeries, one surgery was botched and I leaked spinal fluid. I have been on my medications for 10 yrs and know because of a move (lost my home).I am suffering greatly. I do not know where to turn. I worked up until my illness left in mobile. These meds were my only relief so I could walk and try to do some normal activities.I have called every Pain Management in my new area and I am treated like a leaper. Is'nt there any physicians that have had a loved one or a personal experience that would allow them not to look at me as a person. I know have fractures in my thoracic Region, Severe Cervical Deterioration, and all my discs frm SL1-L4-5 are gone. What is left for me? I am constantly in severe pain.It effects my outlook and personality. The stress from constant pain puts stress on my heart. I do not smoke.I trry to keep myself moblie by doing P/T @ HOME,walking.I lost my job and my self esteem.I tired of the label.I do have a wonderful primary that attends to my other needs but she can not help me with serious illness.I was told in the past that I would be on this med regiment for the rest of my life because my back injuries are so severe but I can not find anyone that will allow that because they do not want to be involved. I thought the Physicians Oath was to do no harm. I am dying everyday.I have been on this for over 9 years and they do not care. I am in the Tri-State Area. Does anyone in the medical field want to help. I have a clean record. Of course I am addicted as anyone would be to any medication they have taken for such a long period of time. Where are the doctors that realize that this a maintenance issue? I really need someone to step forward. The AMA KNOWS THAT THE cYMBALATA treatment for pain is a crock of you know what. When will someone step forward and help the patients truly in need of the pain regiment.

MY SPINE ISSUES ARE EXTENSIVE AND SEVERE.
I feel your pain, and share your anger and frustration. I don't know where you live, but if you are lucky enough to live in a medical marijuana state, GET LEGAL! I did, and because I now use THC concentrates, my legal Rx use of methadone for pain has been reduced from 90 mg daily to 10mg daily! And the quality of pain relief is soooo much better. If you live somewhere else, you might want to think about moving out here to the West Coast.
After a decade of chronic pain, and standing at the door of giving up on walking anymore, my life has changed drastically in less than a year. I have hope! And at times - as long as Im in a good seated position, and dont move - I am relatively pain free. That is a miracle, and I thank God.
Good luck to you. THERE IS HOPE.
P.S.
TO EVERYBODY WHO THINKS POT IS A BAD DRUG-YOU HAVE BELIEVED A LIE. IT IS A WONDERFUL MEDICINAL PLANT WITH MANY USES AND BENEFITS. YOU CANNOT OVERDOSE ON IT, AND WHAT IS SO BAD ABOUT THE FACT IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER? ILL TELL YOU A SECRET: THE MORE YOUR BODY NEEDS IT FOR MEDICINE, THE LESS OF A HEAD BUZZ YOU GET. YOU SHOULD GOOGLE "RUN FROM THE CURE" AND WATCH IT.

Hello everyone... So i got a call a week ago and got told the pain clinic wanted to see me in a week which was today. So i went to the pain clinic today and had to give a pee test for a drug screen. I had smoked weed a couple days before i got the phone call and they didn't give me time enough to get it out of my system. So my question is this was my first appt with them so will they kick me out because of the weed in my system cause i didn't sign the contract until today so it isn't like i have broken the pain clinic contract or anything. They are suppose to be putting me back on my pain medications too so is the weed going to make it to where they don't do that either even if they do keep me as a patient?? I just worried about it all .. I live in Indiana and have been to this pain clinic before for 8 yrs til i lost my insurance and now i got insurance again and my doctor had said something about sending me back but didn't say if they were going to or not then i get this phone call out of the blue about two days after my doctor mention it or else i would have never smoke the weed. Its just it helps with my pain.. please anyone that can help me with this i would be so thankful. I mean you think since it was my first visit that they would give me another pee test a little later and when it came back clean they would go ahead and give me my medications and just check my pee from here on out and tell me that if im not clean ever again then i would get kick out i so hope that is how this all plays out ... :(

Catlover oreo - I don't think it matters - if you can - put off the appointment and get the THC out of your system. Even in a State that uses marijuana for legal use for pain control you may have a problem with the clinic's insurance carrier. Put it OFF. Get clean, then GO. Give up the pot and let them help you. But, if it was even months ago that you smoked and they detect anything illegal - you're most probably OUTTA there! Prescribed meds are one thing. But illegal narcs are TABOO! Alcohol is another no-no. Don't have ANYTHING in your system. Their insurance carriers need them to run a much more thorough test that employment, sports, et al. Be Aware! Get it out of your system. Put off the appointment if you can. They detect metabolites also - so do what you have to if you need actual pain relief. No excuse is accepted.

Just hoping you got this in time catlover oreo. I went to High Mass in the Greek Orthodox Faith with my elderly Aunt - had 2 glasses of Grappa (grape leaves on the bottom with grape leaves, Grappa then Olive oil) and with just 2 small snifter glasses with the Holy Bread as the Body and Blood of Christ and they smelled it on me. (If you've ever had Grappa you'd wonder how anyone could get bombed off it - it's sour. Which it's supposed to be - but no matter. They tested me and it came back 0.0001 - but that it showed ANYTHING - (and the doctor wears the Yamulka of the Jewish Faith that we protected during the pogroms in Russia) I was told I wasn't allowed to come back but to titrate my narcotics down and find another pain management doctor. My Aunt was there and swore that we'd come from Mass. No. Nothing doing. I had to go elsewhere. I reported him to his Rabbi with word from Tel Aviv where the three Rabbi's of the Covenant reside), Malta (where the Knights of St. John reside) and from Rome. (We're Eastern Orthodox - but still under the Pope not the Patriarch {who knows? Maybe he lost a poker game centuries ago?}) and no go. I had to leave. The physician - no more a man than I - had to leave his synagogue with his family. They found he disregarded the Covenant between our Religions. I still had to leave - but they looked upon it not as a physician vs. a lay man - but as part and parcel of an agreement rendered centuries before. I doubt you'll even get that consideration. So - don't go no matter when THEY can see you - YOU go when YOU say to get the best they can offer you.

This is my first post, so be patient. I have been taking vicodin for 14 years now for back pain. I had a knee replacement in 2003. I continued to take the vicodin prescribed. I also have have 5 different kinds of arthritis. Since 2007 I have been going to the VA and have been prescribed the same vicodin. 2009 I was told I had to retire from truck driving because of my back. Up until recently, everything was fine. Then, the reality of my alcohol abuse over the years was discovered in my enzyme count in my liver. I was overweight and had diabetes for 2 years.
This Dr. told me I had to quit drinking (I knew this was gonna happen eventually, so there was no surprise) and lose weight. She took me off the vicodin because the acetaminophen, took me off the metformin and put me on insulin. This I did not want so I am bound and determined to quit drinking and lose the weight. 2 months later I have not had a drop a alcohol and have lost 42 lbs. Instead of the vicodin, I am now having to take morphine sulfate 45 mgs 2 times a day. This does not work as good as the vicodin 7.5mg 3 times a day. Today I told her this and now she wants to put me in a pain management clinic and take urinalysis tests and I had to sign a contract. I don't get this. There are days when I wouldn't take all my Vicodin and I told her this. Some days, I wouldn't take any at all. I was NOT hooked on the drug. My prescription history will prove this out. (I guess they think I was selling this stuff) Anyways, I had to take drug tests all the time when I drove a truck and never once was I questioned about the vicodin in my system. I really feel like I'm being treated like a little kid in all this BS. I'm 58 years old and she thinks I'm a druggie or something. All I want to do is be pain free and not have to take diabetes medications. I have 2 friends who are no longer taking diabetes medication and I know this can be done. But they exercise, which I cannot as much due to my arthritis in my knees. I'm sorry I'm rambling and venting. I'm about ready to throw this dam morphine in her face and just start smoking marijuana and take the arthritis pills. Drug tests are an invasion of ones privacy. I understand the govt. thinking and I agree to a certain extent. People will abuse the system. You have to understand another thing here. The closet Dr. here is 45 miles away and if they send me to a clinic that's 95 miles away. The VA down here in Ga sends me all over the state to see DR.'s I'm done venting and rambling. Thank you for hearing me out.

icedad,
Vent away! I haven't read all these posts because I'm sure more than one will make me mad. So for what it's worth, here's my opinion.
If it came down to the bottom line, I'd smoke pot. I haven't since 1983, BUT, there's no doubt in my mind, if my meds were cut off, it would mean coping with pain in anyway I could. Starting with the least harmful. ( Pot being the least harmful.) The thing is, there's no way I could live with this pain. I'd rather be dead. Now, IF my meds were cut off for whatever lame excuse pm wants to use, I wouldn't have to take a ua anyway. I could always go to a "legal" state to buy it, and how would anyone prove that I wasn't there when I smoked it? I understand the Fed and State have a difference of opinion, but it would be awfully nice if they could argue about this and NOT involve those of us that are legitimately in pain.
Anyone that's suffered from chronic pain wont judge another for doing everything in their power to get relief. There but for the grace of God...
Janet :)

Sam, I think it pretty hypocritical of you to say that people who smoke pot are just doing it to get high, when you have posted how you mix the kind of meds you're taking with booze, "a true high," as you put it. Pot may not be legal in most states, but it's a hell of a lot safer than mixing high potency pain meds with alcohol...
