Too much pain...giving up

Started by greyswannie on 03/22/2010 11:42pm

My friend turned 69 last week and has been going through very tough times, almost giving up. Three years ago, he had back surgery, and ended up paralyzed and in a wheelchair. 6 months later, he had a pump inserted in his abdomen which is refilled after ...I guess every 3 to 6 months. He hoped that would take care of the pain that he has been experiencing since the surgery. He has been to many many doctors due to pain and the uncountable UTIs.

I met him almost 2 years back and had been with him to different doctor's appointments, chiropractors and gone with him for alternative medicine. 6-8 months back, he tried the oxygen chamber which sounded promising but instead, his pain is getting worse. He is in the verge of giving up. He has tried almost everything...he has ran out of options.

Has anyone gone through this kind of a problem or can anyone assist my friend? I hate to see him hurting or even miserable...,most of the time he tries not to show it but sometimes its just hard. His paralysis seems to be quickly moving above his injury level...which is very very worrying. Please help. Any little help will be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know the details of the source of his pain, but you might want to investigate spinal cord stimulation. I just finished a trial for cervical pain and it gave me wonderful relief...I am now waiting approval to have the surgery for the permanant stimulator implant. I do know that it also works for lower back pain and related leg pain in many cases.

Hope this helps!

Its good that this article tackle about the teamwork during an operation. Teamwork is not just for health care duties but also for sports. I always wished to see Donovan McNabb win a Super Bowl. He has the talent - heck, a lot of it. (Some very average QBs have own Super Bowls, and some legends never did - Marino, for example.) I don't think it will happen now that the Philadelphia Eagles had McNabb traded to Redskins for some draft picks. I don't think the team needed payday advances or anything. Vick doesn't appear to be ready to go back to starting, so Kolb is going to likely be the guy - we'll see where that goes. At least he was not traded to the Cowboys - there would have been riots.

I hope you encourage your friend not to give up! I had a tumor that was discovered back in 1988. To make a long story short, I am now having major pain in my legs, feet, and back. I am about to get a trial for the pain pump. The kind of pain your friend is going through is just exhausting. I really feel for him and understand the pain.

Has he ever considered the spinal cord stimulator? It's another implanted device, but they do a trial first just as they do with the pain pump. Also, does he see a pain management doctor? I assume so, since he's got the pump.

Just wanted to write and tell you from first hand experience how hopeless you tend to feel when you're in this kind of pain. I hope your friend starts feeling better. Just try to be understanding.

Good luck.

Pam
