Foraminotomy......Any Advice?

Started by redjune on 02/09/2010 1:44pm

Hello. Is there anyone out there who has had this operation? Can you tell me how successful it was and how soon could you return to work/normal life?
I think that this is the operation I am going to be having in a few weeks and would just like to know what other people have to say about it.

rejune....

After qualifying like how all docs do, this doctor says you should go home in a day and be able to resume normal activity in a couple of weeks ( Foraminotomy: Spinal Surgical Procedure ), my understanding is you should be able to work after a week and be back to normal after 2, assuming things go well.

Let us know how it goes. There are a bunch of foraminotomy questions on this board right now and would love to hear about your experience.

I had one in November 2008 and it was a bandaid only - they used a 4-month old MRI which had changed and after demanding another MRI a few weeks later, I had a cervical fusion, C5-C7 in December 2008. Still have unresolved numbness problems in my left index finger. Whether your surgery is successful or not depends on so many factors. Hope it goes well for you.

it works out well if you have a narrow spinal foramen demonstrated on MRI, and may be have had a nerve block to make sure that is the right nerve being affected... then and only then that foraminotomy works. If your MRI is older than 4-6 mos, and if your symptoms have changed, you need to repeat the MRI...the other option is to have a percutaneous anterior cervical discectomy without fusion ... but not too many surgeons do this

What's a nerve block and what does it do?!

Yes I have had one. It appears to have relieved the major pain on my cervical. I would say that I am still in the recovery stage. I had the surgery mid Jan 2010. The was a lot os post op pain. They gave me some good pain meds which seems to control the problem. Talk with your MD and he can reassure you on the benefits vers the negatives. .
