fusion extension from L4 L5 down to S1 removing screws & replacing them

Started by mar1959 on 01/07/2013 6:30pm

I had my L4 L5 fused w/my bone graft 20 years ago. I was in the hospital 6 days and sent home with a hard turtle shell that I had to wear for a little over 3 months. I had no problem with surgery until I injured myself at work resulting in a knee surgery and now I'm facing another back surgery extending the fusion down to the disk just below my L4 L5 fusion. My doctor says that he will have to go in front-wise to perform the surgery, is that how the majority of the surgeons perform it?. He also said that I would be in a turtle shell for 3 months. I've had many people tell me that it's not a good idea for me to be in a turtle shell for 3 months and that most doctors do not put you in that type of device anymore is this true, and why isn't it good to wear the brace? Some people have the surgery and have no brace and their back hurts quite a bit afterward for a long time. I didn't have that problem. I'm really torn about this brace issue and having the surgery front-wise.

I will advise you to be very careful b4 undergoing surgery again. Back surgery is the worst surgery a human being can face only once in his life. I can say this to u because me too has undergone surgery 3 years ago and my case has worsen. So, its better u see other opinions before deciding....tks for reading.
