independent medical evaluation for existing disability claim

Started by Bucco41 on 08/14/2014 4:05pm

I have suffered from chronic back pain due to Degenerative Disc Disease. This seems to have been the result of sports injuries complicated be a major automobile accident. After regressing several years, my employer requested that I turn to Long Term Disability. Although very humiliating and depressing, they approved it once they received my MRIs and other records. That was nearly 10 years ago. I am not a surgical candidate, as I have too many discs that are herniated and diseased. Under advisement of my then Neurosurgeon, I ended up with a Pain Management doctor as well as a Chiropractor. Anyway, after almost 10 years of LTD, my insurance provider just sent me a certified letter stating that I have an appointment with another Physical Medicine and Pain Management Doctor who will perform a Medical Evaluation to determine if they will continue to honor my claim. The insurance representative claims that it is to just update my status, however she did state that should this 'independent" doctor determine that I am OK, my claim would almost immediately be closed. I am apprehensive and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what the evaluation entails.
