Removal of L5-S1 fusion hardware

Started by 1394961229@facebook on 11/28/2012 7:17pm

Hi, I am trying to find out if anyone has had hardware removed after a L5-S1 fusion. I had the fusion done in 2004 due to bones not fusing naturally. I have been having lots if pain lately and was sent to see a neurosurgeon to talk about possibly putting a spinal stimulator in. After he looked at my back and felt around and realized where the pain was, he said that removing the hardware could possibly help more right now because it seems the hardware is irritating tissue and muscle and causing the pain. I am just trying to find out the recovery time for this and if anyone who had it was happy with it. I cant seem to find many people who've had this done, so I would like to know if doing this will help.

Hi Laura!! I likex to start off by saying I'm so sorry for all the pain you are in. I know exactly what you areexperencing as far as the fusion. I just had my done 8 months ago, and still experencing alot of pain in my back and nerve pain. Shortly after my surgery my Dr ordered me a bone growth stimulator, and he explained it helps for the fusion to become solid and help to have a faster and better solid fusion. I used the stimulator twice a day for a hour each time. I experienced an increase in discomfort and pain, and the Dr explained some people experiences pain but nothing to worry about. This stimulator did help me to fuse much quicker. I would suggest that you really think about it and research. Also discuss it more in depth with your Dr, and it's something to try before you have another surgery to have any hardware taken out. Possibly if you become solidly fused then there's a good chance that it will relieve your pain, and stop irratating your muscles and tissue. Hope this helped you out. Take it easy and hope you feel better soon, and the Dr will be able to help get ride of all of your pain.
